The 麻豆影院 campus recently had a chance to show its resiliency and adaptability in the face of an extreme weather campus closure. The September flooding provided a multi-day implementation of many of the policies and procedures our campus has in place for closures and emergencies, and I join Chancellor DiStefano in extending my deep appreciation for how our community reacted to the crisis. Earlier this month I sent our annual reminder of campus closing procedures during emergencies, and I want to make sure you are familiar with its key points. I encourage you to become an active partner when we respond to closure situations 鈥 by knowing what you should do and how to find the information you need.

Your student government: CUSG fall elections and 'approval voting'

By the University of Colorado Student Government Each year, the University of Colorado Student Government holds two elections, one in the fall and one in the spring. Previous elections have followed a system very similar to the voting system on the national level, in which voters only vote for the same amount of people as spots open. However, beginning last spring CUSG chose to go another route and implement an entirely new voting system called "approval voting."

When this year鈥檚 iGEM team at the 麻豆影院 began meeting early this year, they wanted to take what they knew about biology, and use it to build something entirely new. iGEM, or International Genetically Engineered Machine, is the top synthetic biology competition in the world and after a foundation-building first year, the CU-麻豆影院 team wanted to make an impact in 2013.

As a campus, we have been challenged by Chancellor DiStefano to continue the process of reinventing and realigning the way we do our work. To foster this innovation, we want to ensure that we are making smart decisions that support our goal of recruiting, developing and retaining the best talent in the market. One of the first interactions faculty, staff and student employees have with CU-麻豆影院 is through human resources. Whether it is the recruiting process, filling out necessary paperwork or making sure we follow best practices for review and promotion, there is a dedicated cadre of individuals on the campus who are responsible for making this work go smoothly. On Oct. 28, we will be launching a comprehensive survey help us better understand the nature and type of work these professionals do for our institution.

By the University of Colorado Student Government We live in an age of acronyms that inundate our day-to-day world with a thick buzzing of white noise, so it is certainly understandable that many students feel overwhelmed with the barrage of CU-official personalities that cover the campus. Despite the high concentration of CU-logoed "traffic" that we encounter here in 麻豆影院, it actually is worth your time and effort as a student to pay special attention to the University of Colorado Student Government (CUSG).
