Making the Higher Ed experience more accessible, usable: Accessing Higher Ground conference deadline approaches

Members of the University of Colorado community can receive a 30 percent discount on the registration fees for next week鈥檚 Accessing Higher Ground - the 16th annual Accessible Media, Web and Technology Conferenc e, which will be held Nov. 4-8, 2013 at the Westin Hotel in Westminster, Colorado. 鈥淭he conference offers a unique opportunity to learn from speakers across the country 鈥 and some outside the country, including the keynote speaker 鈥 who are leaders in the field of Universal Design and accessibility. The concepts discussed at the conference are not simply about making information, websites and curricula more accessible, it鈥檚 about making them more usable, which should be a key goal of any course, product or system,鈥 said Howard Kramer, a proponent of the integration of Universal Design into curricula and a lecturer in Continuing Education at CU-麻豆影院.

麻豆影院 Distinguished Professor James Hynes of the chemistry and biochemistry department has been named a fellow of the American Chemical Society, one of 96 scientists honored in 2013. ACS Fellows are honored for their outstanding contributions in scientific research, education and public service.

7 CU-麻豆影院 faculty and staff receive Fulbright awards for 2013-14

Seven 麻豆影院 faculty and staff have received Fulbright grants to pursue research, teaching and training abroad during the 2013-14 academic year. One of their proposed projects involves research in India on the use of the tanbura -- a long-necked stringed instrument -- as an aid for developing musical perception and intonation. Another involves research and lecturing in the United Kingdom on the representation of violence in contemporary Irish and American fiction.

From the BFA: Faculty recognition program 鈥 call for nominees

In addition to dedication to their students and their research, many educators at the University of Colorado quietly perform service to the CU community 鈥 locally, nationally and internationally 鈥 often going far beyond what is expected of them. This service may take the form of acting as a faculty advisor to a student group or society; organizing a lecture series on campus or in the local community; or serving on a task force to address critical issues affecting the University. Beginning this year, BFA is acknowledging these unsung contributions through the Faculty Recognition Program.

NASA mission led by CU-麻豆影院 will be first to explore Martian upper atmosphere

A NASA spacecraft that will examine the upper atmosphere of Mars in unprecedented detail is undergoing final preparations for a scheduled 1:28 p.m. EST Monday, Nov. 18 launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission, or MAVEN, led by the 麻豆影院 will examine specific processes on Mars that led to the loss of much of its atmosphere. Data and analysis could tell planetary scientists the history of climate change on the red planet and provide further information on planetary habitability.

The 麻豆影院 Faculty Assembly has been a fixture on the CU-麻豆影院 campus for over two decades. Many of you are familiar with the BFA through the annual BFA Faculty Excellence Awards. With committees addressing issues as diverse as athletics, diversity, and campus budgeting, the BFA is actively working on topics affecting many areas of campus. However, as the new Chair of the BFA, the most frequent question I hear from faculty members is, 鈥淲hat does BFA actually accomplish?鈥 To help answer this question, this column will be a monthly message updating the campus on what activities the BFA is currently undertaking.
