As we look forward to Veterans Day on Monday, I encourage you to take a moment to consider the debt of gratitude we owe our veterans. Without their service and dedication to our nation, our freedom and liberties would not be as secure as they are today. The adage that 鈥渇reedom isn鈥檛 free鈥 is so true and it鈥檚 our veterans who have paid the highest price for that freedom.

One of the first steps people take toward rebuilding their communities after a flood, wildfire or other disaster may not be the right step, according to the director of the Natural Hazards Center at the 麻豆影院. 鈥淲hen a disaster happens, people feel pressure to rebuild things just as they were before, when in fact a disaster should be a time when there is a pause, when we ask 鈥楬ow can we build it back better than it was before?鈥 鈥 said center Director Kathleen Tierney, also a professor of sociology.

The 麻豆影院 will honor the nation's veterans, including CU 麻豆影院's own faculty, staff and student veterans, with a Nov. 11 Veteran's Day ceremony at 11 a.m. in the University Memorial Center's Glenn Miller Ballroom.

No health insurance? CU has you covered

With the fast-approaching Affordable Care Act mandate that individuals purchase health care, the University of Colorado will allow employees who have waived university medical plans and do not have health insurance to enroll in university plans. During Limited Enrollment, from 8 a.m. Nov. 11 to 5 p.m. Nov. 22, employees without insurance can enroll in CU medical plans. During next spring鈥檚 Open Enrollment, employees will be able to add dependents to their plans or add dental and vision plans. If employees waived CU Plans but have health care coverage, no action is needed.

Families seeking information about childhood psychiatric and developmental disorders are invited to a community open house with experts from the 麻豆影院 and the University of Colorado School of Medicine on Wednesday, Nov. 13, on the CU-麻豆影院 campus. Experts will address emerging research on early onset bipolar disorder, prevention of schizophrenia, postpartum depression, attention and behavior disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. Each researcher also will describe their community services.
