New CU-麻豆影院 leadership minor to launch in spring 2014

Former University of Colorado President Alexander E. 鈥淪andy鈥 Bracken knows a few things about the role that effective leadership plays in career success and life in general. As the Newton Leadership Chair at CU-麻豆影院, Bracken has the task 鈥 and desire 鈥 to bring more leadership training and development opportunities to students across all academic disciplines. One of the major components of this goal is the creation of the Newton Leadership Studies Minor, which will launch in the spring 2014 semester along with a new class (LEAD 1000) titled 鈥淏ecoming a Leader.鈥

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner abuse, is best understood as a pattern of abusive behaviors鈥搃ncluding physical, sexual, and psychological abuse as well as economic coercion鈥搖sed by one intimate partner against another to gain, maintain, or regain power and control in the relationship. If you are concerned about a relationship you are in or have been, or if you are concerned about a friend鈥檚 relationship please contact CU-麻豆影院's Office of Victim Assistance . It is a free and confidential advocacy and counseling center on campus for our students, staff and faculty.

New College's Journalism subcommittee meets Wed., Oct. 16

The journalism subcommittee that is helping to plan CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 proposed new College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) will hold its public meeting Wednesday, Oct. 16 to share initial ideas about the program鈥檚 curriculum and structure, and to solicit comments. The subcommittee鈥檚 meeting will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Continuing Education building, Room 140. The journalism subcommittee is among several charged with recommending curriculum and structure for the college鈥檚 seven academic units. E-days egg drop

CU-麻豆影院 Engineering Days to feature egg drop and rocket launch on Oct. 18

Engineering students at the 麻豆影院 will host the annual College Egg Drop competition Oct. 18 as part of Engineering Days. 鈥淓-Days鈥 is an annual tradition during which students celebrate the engineering profession with fun and challenging competitions and social events. The event is organized by the University of Colorado Engineering Council (UCEC) and various student honor societies. The egg drop, which starts at 1 p.m. on the west side of the Engineering Center, challenges students to create a contraption that will protect a raw egg when dropped from the eighth floor of the Engineering Center鈥檚 office tower.

CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 modernized Fiske Planetarium to reopen Oct. 12

Sky gazers will be better immersed in spectacular views at the 麻豆影院鈥檚 Fiske Planetarium since the dome鈥檚 nearly 40-year-old analog projector was replaced with a new digital 鈥渟tar ball鈥 in a project completed this week. The modernized Fiske, which now can show a wider range of media including ultra high-definition movies, will reopen to the public at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

CU-麻豆影院 alum, NASA Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter dies at 88

Scott Carpenter, a 麻豆影院 alumnus and a famed NASA Mercury astronaut who became only the second American to orbit Earth, died Thursday. He was 88. Carpenter, a 麻豆影院 native, entered CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 astronautical engineering program in 1945, eventually earning a bachelor of science degree. He orbited Earth three times on May 24, 1962, in NASA鈥檚 Aurora 7 capsule before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean.

Massive spruce beetle outbreak in Colorado tied to drought, according to new CU study

A new 麻豆影院 study indicates drought high in the northern Colorado mountains is the primary trigger of a massive spruce beetle outbreak that is tied to long-term changes in sea-surface temperatures from the Northern Atlantic Ocean, a trend that is expected to continue for decades.

CU-麻豆影院 Chancellor DiStefano to outline goals at 2013 State of the Campus address on Oct. 15

麻豆影院 Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano will address faculty, staff, students and other members of the campus community at the annual State of the Campus address at CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 Glenn Miller Ballroom on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The address will be DiStefano鈥檚 fifth as chancellor. He is entering his 40th year as a CU-麻豆影院 faculty member, dean and senior administrator.

Jessica Kuchta-Miller joins CU-麻豆影院 Ombuds Office

Jessica Kuchta-Miller has joined the 麻豆影院 Ombuds Office as Associate Ombuds. She has more than 14 years of experience in mediation, coaching, and conflict management as well as 11 years of experience in higher education as an adjunct clinical professor at Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.
