New CU-麻豆影院 study shows differences in mammal responses to climate change

If you were a shrew snuffling around a North American forest, you would be 27 times less likely to respond to climate change than if you were a moose grazing nearby. That is just one of the findings of a new 麻豆影院 assessment led by Assistant Professor Christy McCain that looked at more than 1,000 different scientific studies on North American mammal responses to human-caused climate change.

The recent events on the CU-麻豆影院 campus surrounding the 鈥淒eviance in U.S. Society鈥 course have generated a great deal of discussion amongst faculty members on a number of critical issues related to academic freedom, Rights and Responsibilities of Faculty and Chairs, and administrative procedures amongst others. Many requests have come to the 麻豆影院 Faculty Assembly to address these issues as the representative body of the CU-麻豆影院 faculty.

Deadline for 2014 Hazel Barnes Prize nominations is Feb. 14

The Hazel Barnes Prize is one of the most prestigious awards at the 麻豆影院 and focuses on the enriching relationship that occurs between teaching and research. Nominees should be regionally and nationally recognized, tenured faculty members who are not only outstanding teachers but also have distinguished records in research and scholarship over a substantial period of time at the 麻豆影院.

CU-built software uses big data to battle forgetting with personalized content review

Computer software similar to that used by online retailers to recommend products to a shopper can help students remember the content they鈥檝e studied, according to a new study by the 麻豆影院. The software, created by computer scientists at CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 Institute for Cognitive Science, works by tapping a database of past student performance to suggest what material an individual student most needs to review.

On the third Monday of the month CU-麻豆影院 Today publishes a roundup of deadlines, calls for proposals and calls for nominations that have come through our information channels. This month, the list includes several important nomination deadlines, many of which fall on or near Valentine's Day. Plan ahead now for nominations for the Distinguished Research Lecturer, the Hazel Barnes Prize, or the Marinus Smith award. Study abroad, PTSP, COLTT, and Foreign Language and Area Studies are among other programs that have deadlines on the horizon.

Marvin Caruthers, distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry, is the recipient of the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences, and Deborah Jin, an adjoint professor of physics, is the recipient of the Comstock Prize in Physics.

Two 麻豆影院 researchers were among the 15 honored this week by the National Academy of Sciences for their extraordinary scientific achievements. Marvin Caruthers, distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry, is the recipient of the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences, and Deborah Jin, an adjoint professor of physics, is the recipient of the Comstock Prize in Physics. Caruthers is being honored for his groundbreaking work on the chemical synthesis of DNA and RNA that made it possible to decode and encode genes and genomes.
