The amount of dust being blown across the landscape has increased over the last 17 years in large swaths of the West, according to a new study led by the Â鶹ӰԺ. The escalation in dust emissions — which may be due to the interplay of several factors, including increased windstorm frequency, drought cycles and changing land-use patterns — has implications both for the areas where the dust is first picked up by the winds and for the places where the dust is put back down.

John Bennett steps down at ATLAS, nominations sought for next director

After six extraordinary years of service, John Bennett is stepping down as Faculty Director of the Â鶹ӰԺ ATLAS Institute. Under John’s leadership, ATLAS has launched a professional M.S. degree in Information and Communication Technology for Development, grown its Ph.D. program in Technology, Media and Society from two to nearly 20 students and grown its popular certificate and minor in Technology, Arts and Media (TAM) from about 250 to about 800 undergraduates.

A team of researchers led by the Â鶹ӰԺ has discovered a protein complex that could be targeted with drugs to stunt tumor growth. As tumors expand, their centers are deprived of oxygen, and so tumors must flip specific genetic switches to survive in these hypoxic environments.
