Sanders receives STEM Leadership Hall of Fame award

Lucy Sanders, CEO for the National Center for Women & Information Technology ( NCWIT ) was recently recognized as a national U.S. News STEM Leadership Hall of Fame awardee. NCWIT is a non-profit organization housed within the 麻豆影院鈥檚 College of Engineering and Applied Science , and helps its members more effectively recruit, retain and advance girls and women in K-12 through college education, and from academic to corporate and startup careers.

CU ecology prof garners two high honors

Pieter Johnson, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at CU-麻豆影院, is having a pretty good year. He and a co-researcher have won an award recognizing outstanding contributions to ecology, and he has been named an Early Career Fellow by the Ecological Society of America.

Things have changed at CU. What Rick George steps into in 2013, both locally and nationally, bears little resemblance to what he left when he waved so-long to college athletics in 1998. Since then, he鈥檚 remained in sports but in different positions at different levels 鈥 a factor that played well to the CU search committee. 鈥淚鈥檝e been in sports all my life and never done anything else . . . CU study illuminates mortality differences between nondrinkers and light drinkers

As a class, people who don鈥檛 drink at all have a higher mortality risk than light drinkers. But nondrinkers are a diverse bunch, and the reasons people have for abstaining affects their individual mortality risk, in some cases lowering it on par with the risk for light drinkers, according to a University of Colorado study.

麻豆影院 Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano today named Rick George as director of intercollegiate athletics at CU-麻豆影院, effective Aug. 12, 2013. George currently serves as president of business operations for the Texas Rangers major league baseball team and has spent more than three decades as a sports executive in the collegiate and professional ranks, including a stint as assistant athletic director for football operations for CU from 1987-91.

Colorado to see continued growth in 2013, forecasts CU economist

The Colorado economy continues to grow in 2013 at a magnitude that exceeds previous expectations going into the year, according to economist Richard Wobbekind of the 麻豆影院鈥檚 Leeds School of Business. Midway through the year, Colorado鈥檚 job growth rate is up by about 2.3 percent -- a gain of about 52,400 jobs from May 2012 to May 2013. The job growth rate is expected to continue to rise to about 2.5 percent -- a figure that was revised from estimates last December when the projection was at about 1.8 percent.
