The Â鶹ӰԺ reduced the cost of curtailing the 4/20 event by nearly $17,000 in 2013 compared with costs incurred in 2012. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ spent $107,794 to close the campus to non-affiliates this year, and $124,561 to close the campus on April 20, 2012.

Last year, I announced an aggressive goal of $100 million in annual giving for our campus. In May the university announced a realignment of the development structure to move fundraising staff from the CU Foundation to the university. Folding our fundraising arm into the fabric of the university will result in a more coordinated development effort and will reflect the operations of high-performing public universities nationwide.

Waleed Abdalati named new director of CIRES; former NASA chief scientist starts July 1

Waleed Abdalati has been named the new director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, a joint institute of the Â鶹ӰԺ and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Abdalati is a CIRES Fellow, a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ professor of geography and director of the CIRES Earth Science and Observation Center. He will take office on July 1.

The Â鶹ӰԺ has become a full institutional member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV, an ambitious effort by some of the world’s top astronomers to map the celestial sky in three dimensions to learn more about the structure and evolution of the universe.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ selected to be one of eight sites for national STEM education initiative

The Â鶹ӰԺ has been chosen by the Association of American Universities to be one of eight campuses participating in a new initiative to improve undergraduate education in science, technology, engineering and math. Over the next three years, each of the eight project sites will receive $500,000 to undertake an innovative STEM education project.
