CU, MIT breakthrough in photonics could allow for faster and faster electronics

A pair of breakthroughs in the field of silicon photonics by researchers at the 麻豆影院, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Micron Technology Inc. could allow for the trajectory of exponential improvement in microprocessors that began nearly half a century ago鈥攌nown as Moore鈥檚 Law鈥攖o continue well into the future, allowing for increasingly faster electronics, from supercomputers to laptops to smartphones.

Flood-displaced faculty and staff invited to apply for CU-麻豆影院 Disaster Recovery funds

$500-per-household cash cards are available to assist current faculty and employees who are either temporarily or permanently displaced from their homes. The funding has been made available by generous gifts to the CU-麻豆影院 Disaster Recovery Fund , and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The online application form for the funding is accessible through the campus鈥 2013 flood resources website . Funds are limited, so only those with financial hardship should apply.

Join a committee to support students' international careers

Do you interact with students who want to go abroad in some capacity? Are you getting more questions from students on how to do so? A cross-campus committee, called the International Career Advisory Team (ICAT), was created for just this reason! Our purpose is to share knowledge and resources on international volunteer, internship, and job opportunities, both within the U.S. and abroad. Climate change, through the language of the arts

When the conversation turns to global warming, many Americans are inclined to turn away. And why not? After all, it鈥檚 a vast and complicated subject. Truly understanding it seems to require specialized knowledge most people don鈥檛 possess. And perhaps most notably, it鈥檚 become such a hot-button political issue that it easily inflames passions. The trick is figuring out how to reach people without turning them off. Using the arts to inspire an emotional connection to and a deeper understanding of a difficult subject is the idea behind a series of events at CU-麻豆影院 Oct. 1-6.

CU-麻豆影院 Disaster Recovery Fund now over $141,000, fundraising continues

More than 1,000 donors so far have contributed over $141,000 in the last nine days to the CU-麻豆影院 Disaster Recovery Fund , representing a strong and compassionate response to the needs of CU-麻豆影院 students, faculty and staff in the wake of this month鈥檚 historic Colorado flood.

Student volunteers help recovery efforts in several 麻豆影院 neighborhoods

Last weekend, nearly two hundred CU-麻豆影院 students joined the Volunteer Resource Center for a September Give a Day effort, working to help clear out some of the mud and debris from in and around flood victims鈥 homes in 麻豆影院. In fact, so many people wanted to help, the Volunteer Resource Center had to put a cap on the number of students allowed to sign up.

CU-麻豆影院 to hold international conference on slavery Sept. 27-28

The 麻豆影院 will host a conference that explores the phenomenon of slavery from a global, historical perspective on Sept. 27-28. The event will include scholars specializing in the study of slavery in ancient, medieval and modern contexts and in global regions that include Western, pre-Columbian, African, Asian and Muslim. Titled 鈥淲hat is a Slave Society: an International Conference on the Nature of Slavery as a Global Historical Phenomenon,鈥 the event will be held in the British and Irish Studies room of Norlin Library.

CU-麻豆影院/NIST physicist Ana Maria Rey wins 2013 MacArthur Fellowship

Ana Maria Rey, a theoretical physicist and a fellow of JILA, a joint institute of the 麻豆影院 and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, today was named a winner of a 2013 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the 鈥済enius grant.鈥 Rey also is an assistant research professor in the CU-麻豆影院 Department of Physics. She teaches undergraduate and graduate classes.
