A lecture on "Disciples of the Buddha and the Words of Chogyam Trungpa" will be presented at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ on Wednesday, April 16. The illustrated lecture by Robert Newman begins at 7 p.m. in room N141 in the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts Building. Newman is the author of the book, "Disciples of the Buddha: Living Images of Meditation," which deals with a famous set of Chinese ceramic statues. He also is director of the World Health Foundation in Ashland, Ore., which specializes in meditational healing.

Most people know it's unhealthy to be overweight, but researchers now say it's important not only how much body fat you have, but where you have it. According to CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Kinesiology Professor Robert Mazzeo, studies show that the bigger the belly the more likely a person is to develop diabetes, heart disease and other health problems.

A NASA astronaut and the founder of Spectra Logic Corp. are among five CU-Â鶹ӰԺ engineering alumni and a non-alumnus who will be honored with Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards by the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ April 11. Astronaut James S. Voss and Spectra Logic Corp. founder Nathan C. Thompson are among the six awardees who will be honored at the 38th annual Engineering Awards Banquet. The banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Millenium Harvest House Hotel in Â鶹ӰԺ and is not open to the public.

For the third time in the last four years, a team of University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ undergraduates was named an Outstanding Winner in the prestigious Mathematical-Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications. The team, consisting of applied mathematics majors Darin Gillis and Aaron Windfield, along with electrical engineering major David Lindstone, was one of only 16 Outstanding Winners among 638 teams from nine countries participating in the 2003 contest.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ School of Law alumnus Timothy M. Tymkovich is the newest member of the United States Court of Appeals, the second highest court in the nation. The U.S. Senate confirmed Tymkovich by a vote of 58-41 on April 1. President Bush nominated him earlier this year. "I was honored to be selected by President Bush for the 10th Circuit vacancy created by Judge John Porfilio," said Tymkovich. "I am grateful for the positive vote by the U.S. Senate and I look forward to serving on the federal bench."

Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will hold Astronomy Day activities including rocket launches, sunspot viewing and demonstrations of planetarium and observatory equipment on Saturday, April 19, from noon to 10 p.m. "We are actually celebrating Astronomy Day a little early this year," said Sanlyn Buxner, an education specialist for Fiske Planetarium. The national day of celebration will be May 10, which is after CU-Â鶹ӰԺ commencement, she said. "We wanted to do our celebration before students leave for the summer."

"Global Justice" is the topic of the 2003 Morris Colloquium to be held April 17-18 at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. Sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ philosophy department, the colloquium will feature two lectures focusing on different aspects of global justice. Both events are free and open to the public.

Jason Newcomer, a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ MBA student, has been selected to receive the Urban Land Institute's Graduate Student Fellowship. The fellowship program encourages top real estate students to become involved in the ULI and allows them to participate in professional events and educational activities at a formative point in their careers. In addition to receiving a two-year membership to the ULI, fellows are also given fee waivers and travel allowances to attend ULI-sponsored conferences and events.

Members of the University of Colorado community today praised the contributions of former CU President Quigg Newton, who died this morning at the age of 91. Newton was the eighth president of the University of Colorado, serving from Dec. 15, 1956 through June 30, 1963. The former Denver mayor died at Denver Health Medical Center. Newton was admitted to the hospital Wednesday after suffering a serious fall and cardiac arrest.

The CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Alumni Association will honor 10 outstanding members of the campus community on May 7 including head women's basketball coach Ceal Barry. They will be recognized for their distinguished careers and exceptional contributions to CU and society during the 73rd Annual Alumni Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, in the Old Main Chapel on the Â鶹ӰԺ campus.
