Â鶹ӰԺ middle school students this spring will study a Tony Award winning play about ethical, moral and personal dilemmas surrounding the creation of the first nuclear bomb as part of a partnership with the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's Center for Humanities and the Arts.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography Professor V. "Ram" Ramanathan will speak at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ March 14 on the "Asian Brown Cloud," including the impacts of air pollution on health and climate in the region. Sponsored by CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, the event is free and open to the public. It will be held Friday at 4 p.m. in the CIRES auditorium and a reception will follow at 5 p.m.

Stan Brakhage, prominent avant-garde filmmaker and distinguished professor at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, died Sunday at the age of 70. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, in room 141 of the Fine Arts building on the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ campus. "I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Stan Brakhage, a brilliant filmmaker and distinguished professor of film studies," said CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Chancellor Richard Byyny. "Stan's contributions to the field of film production cannot be measured. We extend our sympathy to his family and friends."

The CU Business Intensive Certificate program is currently accepting applications from non-business majors. CUBIC is designed for juniors, seniors or graduate students at any accredited college or university. It provides an overview of business skills including accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, personal finance and computing skills. The program will be held at the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Leeds School of Business from May 12 to May 30. Applications must be received by April 16.

Harvard School of Law Professor Robert H. Mnookin will deliver the 46th annual John R. Coen Lecture on, Thursday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom at the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ School of Law. A leading scholar in the field of conflict resolution, Mnookin will discuss Iraq, the Taliban and other conflicts that raise the questions of whether and when to negotiate.

American Indian Advocacy and the indigenous student organization Oyate will host a weeklong conference, "Power, Politics: Native Women Sharing Leadership," at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ March 10-15. "The Â鶹ӰԺ community and general public will have an opportunity to hear Native American women discuss their fields of expertise and experiences addressing contemporary issues as leaders and educators," said Leslee Caballero, American Indian Student Services counselor at the Cultural Unity Center.

Scientists from the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ have proposed a long-sought answer to how atmospheric sulfate aerosols are formed in the stratosphere. Conducted by researchers at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, the research shows how a fundamental molecular process driven by sunlight may play a significant role in determining the planet's energy budget.

The Hubble Space Telescope's "greatest hits" will be highlighted at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's Fiske Planetarium on Friday, March 14, and Tuesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. Doug Duncan, director of the Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will present his live show the "Hubble Space Telescope and Beyond." "During the show, we'll highlight some of the most remarkable images the Hubble has obtained during its 12-year lifetime," Duncan said.

The CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Deming Center for Entrepreneurship has appointed three Colorado business leaders to its advisory board - Joyce Colson-Quinn, Jon Nordmark and Chris Wand. "The Leeds School relies heavily on advice and interaction with professional business people to ensure our curriculum, research and student services keep pace with current best business practices," said Steven Manaster, dean of the Leeds School of Business. The Deming Center is a joint program of the Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles has donated $1.5 million to establish the W.M. Keck Center for Ultracold Molecular Research at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, Chancellor Richard L. Byyny announced today. "This center will build on CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's existing strength in atomic, molecular and optical physics," said Chancellor Byyny. "It will enhance the links between the programs of some of our most outstanding researchers and provide outstanding opportunities for training students and post-doctoral research associates in pioneering science."
