Seniors in Assistant Professor Kendra Gale's advertising campaign class at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will present their communication plan for an illuminated flying disc -- a disc with fiber optic lights powered by a small battery -- on Tuesday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m. in room 425 of the University Memorial Center. The advertising project was developed for "Flashflight," a Â鶹ӰԺ startup company owned by Jeff Scott and Jerry Moore, and a division of Playhard Inc.

The Board of Regents today designated the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) as the first new institute at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ in 35 years and the first campus institute with a mission that will equally balance teaching, research and outreach. ATLAS is a campuswide initiative that aims to prepare all students for lives and leadership careers in the Information Age and is dedicated to improving the understanding and application of information and communication technology.

The Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ has appointed Kirk Holland, a general partner with Vista Ventures, a Broomfield venture capital firm, to its advisory board. The Deming Center is a joint program of the Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Final exams are looming for students as the end of the semester approaches at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. But for one art class in the Kittredge Honors Program, the final exam means creating a public art exhibit.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ student Corry L. Lee has been named a 2003 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The Goldwater scholarship is a prestigious national competition for undergraduates in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering. The scholarship funds up to $7,500 per year for approximately 300 sophomores and juniors from across the country to complete their undergraduate degrees.

More than 60 student inventions ranging from devices that assist people with disabilities to new toys and whimsical Rube Goldberg contraptions will be demonstrated at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's ITLL Spring Design Expo on Saturday, April 26.

Â鶹ӰԺ two dozen tents were removed from Norlin Quadrangle at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ early today by inhabitants of the "Peace Camp/Shanty Town Project." The tents had been erected more than a week ago, in violation of campus policies on the use of university facilities.

Renowned historian Patricia Nelson Limerick of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will give a public lecture May 7 titled "The Rise of Regret in the American West: How to Tell Meaningful Action from Pointless Wallowing." The talk is part of the Chancellor's Community Lecture Series and will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Chautauqua Community House at 900 Baseline Road in Â鶹ӰԺ. The talk is free and open to the public and reservations are not required. Seating is limited.

Two University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ faculty members have been selected to design and build $2.5 million worth of electronics for a fleet of five satellites to study violent magnetic activity around Earth that triggers auroral storms at the poles.

The CU-Â鶹ӰԺ School of Law will present law Professor William Pizzi with the Clifford Calhoun Public Service Award on April 25 in recognition of his contributions to the law school and the legal community. The award is given to those who "contribute to the public service of the law school in the spirit and tradition of the contributions Professor Calhoun made in his career." An anonymous donor established the award in 1998 in honor of Calhoun, who retired that year.
