Student life: CU poet ready to slam

Junior Kaleena Kovach is ready for the competition to begin. On Friday, March 7, she will be one of 10 CU-麻豆影院 student poets competing in the 11th annual CU Poetry Slam. The following week she will take her poetry talent to the stage during the 2014 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational March 12鈥15. Both slams will be in the Glenn Miller Ballroom.

Physician bias does not affect hypertension treatment for minority patients, CU-麻豆影院 study finds

Doctors鈥 unconscious biases favor whites but do not affect high blood pressure treatment for their minority patients, according to a 麻豆影院 study, even though a previous study by the same research group found that doctors鈥 biases are reflected in lower ratings by African-American patients. The new research, led by Irene Blair, an associate professor in CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, is published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Five members of the University of Colorado community are recipients of the 2014 Thomas Jefferson Award, among the highest honors given at CU. The Jefferson Award recognizes CU faculty, staff and students who demonstrate excellence in the performance of regular academic responsibilities while contributing outstanding service to the broader community. Peter Simons, director of the Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement (IECE) at CU-麻豆影院, was named as this year's staff recipient.

The CU Energy Club will host its fifth annual Energy Frontiers conference on Thursday, March 6, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom. The event, focused on the significant energy questions of today, will feature renowned speaker and scientist, Amory Lovins. Two panels, a poster session and career fair hosting a range of entities with ties to energy will follow Lovins鈥 keynote speech. The conference is free and open to the public.
