Tweets sent during last year’s massive flooding on Colorado’s Front Range were able to detail the scope of damage to the area’s infrastructure, according to a study by the Â鶹ӰԺ. The findings can help geotechnical and structural engineers more effectively direct their reconnaissance efforts after future natural disasters—including earthquakes, tsunamis and tornadoes—as well as provide them data that might otherwise be lost due to rapid cleanup efforts.

The public is invited to attend free, Saturday programs led by Â鶹ӰԺ faculty on popular topics as part of the CU on the Weekend series, which begins Sept. 6. With topics ranging from the sweeping stories behind celebrated musical compositions to the micro-level study of bacteria that uniquely forms each person’s microbiome, CU on the Weekend programs are designed to satisfy the community’s curiosity surrounding some of the intriguing research conducted at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ.

The University of Colorado cross country teams have consistently been one of the most dominate combined squads in the nation and this year the Buffs looks like they will remain that way with all of the talent returning to both men’s and women’s teams. The season officially kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 30, as the Buffs will host the CU Alumni/Open/Time Trial at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU’s South Campus. The women’s 5.8-kilometer race will start at 8:30 a.m. and the men’s 8k race will follow at 9:15 a.m. Parking and admission are free.

Find ways to get involved and discover new interests during the fall 2014 Student Involvement Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the UMC fountain and arcade.

The importance of Mars exploration and how the aerospace industry partners with university researchers to advance one of Colorado’s leading economic sectors will be featured at a free program Monday, Sept. 8, in south Denver.

This Friday, Aug. 29, marks the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. We Buffs take pride in our city, our school, and our team, and it’s time once again to support the Buffs in Denver as they take on Colorado State. While we all share the excitement for this important game, it’s worth remembering that your actions at the stadium reflect on our university, our students, and our legacy.

The 2014 Rocky Mountain Showdown featuring the University of Colorado vs. Colorado State University will take place Friday, August 29 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver. The kickoff for this highly anticipated event is at 7 p.m. and marks the 86th meeting of the CU and CSU teams. As the chiefs of the Denver, CSU and CU police departments, we want to welcome all spectators to Denver for the game. We are providing the information in this letter to promote a safe and enjoyable environment in and around the stadium.

Â鶹ӰԺ Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano today announced the appointment of Aaron Conley as vice chancellor for advancement effective Sept. 22. Conley is currently the vice president for development and alumni relations at the University of Texas at Dallas where he was chief strategist for the recent UT Dallas comprehensive campaign that surpassed original campaign goals and almost doubled the total endowment.
