Personal safety has been an important goal at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ for years, but the issue has taken on even greater significance following the recent, random attack on a first-year student.

As student leaders of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, we would like to let the entire campus community know of our concern regarding the events that occurred on Monday, August 27th, outside of the University Memorial Center. We are working closely with the University's administration to enforce all safety plans throughout the campus. Though we recognize that this attack was an isolated incident, it is a reminder to all students, faculty, and staff to always be vigilant and aware of your own safety on the campus.

CU Student Stabbing Victim Doing Well Following Attack At CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Student Union; Officials Are Investigating

A freshman student at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ was resting after surgery Monday afternoon to repair a neck wound following a random stabbing by a middle-aged man who stormed the terrace of the campus student union in Â鶹ӰԺ this morning. The studentÂ’s family has consented to his identification. He is Michael George Knorps, 17, of Winnetka, Ill.

• The victim of the stabbing, Michael George Knorps, 17, is a freshman from Wannetka, Ill. He has undergone surgery at Â鶹ӰԺ Community Hospital and is doing well. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson has been in communication with Mr. KnorpsÂ’ family since late this morning.

MEDIA ADVISORY A news conference on today's stabbing incident at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be held in room 235 of the University Memorial Center beginning at 5 p.m. Participants will include representatives from the CU Police and campus administration. Incident at UMC

The CU Police Department has reported that there was a stabbing incident at the University Memorial Center at approximately 9:45 a.m. today. The suspect has been taken into custody. The victim has been taken to the hospital and appears to be stable. CU officials have been in communication with the family of the student victim. The south side of the UMC has been secured, the suspect's car is being searched and the police are continuing their investigation.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Names Argrow, Bowman Associate Deans Of Engineering

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Professors Brian Argrow and Christopher Bowman have been appointed associate deans in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Argrow will serve as associate dean for education, and Bowman as associate dean for research. The appointments, announced by engineering Dean Robert Davis, were effective Aug. 1. "I am delighted to have two of our top faculty, who excel in both research and teaching, bring their experience and vision to these leadership positions," Davis said.

As they return to campus or begin classes for the first time this fall, University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ students will be asked to sign up for a new wireless text-messaging service enabling the campus to notify them swiftly via mobile phone in case of a campus emergency. In the post-Virginia Tech environment, which heightened concern about campusesÂ’ emergency notification systems, a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Task Force decided that quick text messaging via mobile phone would be a valuable addition to current communication systems which link to students in the event of an emergency.

Health Officials To Contact 39 Students Of CU Research Associate Confirmed To Have TB; Officials See No Imminent Health Threat

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has identified 39 students who were enrolled in a summer class taught by a School of Education research associate who has tested positive for tuberculosis, CU-Â鶹ӰԺ officials said today. The research associate is a Denver resident who has submitted to a voluntary home quarantine, according to Denver Health Medical Center officials who are working with Â鶹ӰԺ Public Health and CU officials.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Signs $92 Million Contract With NOAA, NASA For Space Weather Instrument Package

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ signed a contract today worth an estimated $92 million with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA to build a satellite instrument package to help forecast solar disturbances that affect communication and navigation operations in the United States.
