Staff Council Update: What we鈥檝e accomplished in FY14

Each committee of Staff Council is asked to submit an annual summary of activity and accomplishments to the full council for review to see how effectively we worked during the past year to further our mission: Staff Council represents, informs and educates staff employees by serving as a liaison between employees and 麻豆影院 campus, University system and State administration. We also recommend proposals to the administration that are designed to improve morale and advocate for the rights of staff employees. Click through for the full details of an eventful year.

International team involving CU-麻豆影院 to use Hubble Space Telescope for early galaxy hunt

An international team led by the Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge and involving the 麻豆影院 has a new tool to look for the oldest galaxies in the universe: 32 days of observing time with the Hubble Space Telescope.

CUPD, CU Football to square off in softball game

July 10, 2014

On Saturday, July 12, the University of Colorado Police Department will play softball against the University of Colorado football team for the first time in what is hoped to become an annual event. The game will start at 3 p.m. at the East Mapleton Ball Fields, located behind Whole Foods Market near Mapleton Avenue and 30th Street. Officers from other local agencies, such as the 麻豆影院 Police Department and the 麻豆影院 County Sheriff鈥檚 Office, have also been invited to play. The university community and the public are encouraged to attend.

High Performance Computing Symposium open to CU students, faculty and staff

CU-麻豆影院 students, faculty and staff are invited to enroll at one of the nation鈥檚 top High Performance Computing symposiums , scheduled for Aug. 12-13 at the Wolf Law Building on the CU-麻豆影院 campus. The event, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium, is regarded as one of the top regional symposiums focusing on computing accomplishments and developments in education, research and industry. Discounts are available for student and post-doc attendees.

Wold-McCormick named campus registrar

The 麻豆影院 named Kristi Wold-McCormick, PhD, as campus registrar, effective June 16. Wold-McCormick comes to CU-麻豆影院 from North Dakota State University (NDSU), where she served as registrar for the past twelve years.

At midyear, Colorado poised for continued growth in 2014, says CU Leeds School

The Colorado economy continues to outperform the U.S. economy and grow at a magnitude that slightly exceeds previous expectations, according to the midyear economic outlook released today by the 麻豆影院鈥檚 Leeds School of Business. Colorado鈥檚 employment is up by 3 percent year-over-year from May 2013 to May 2014. A total gain of 68,000 jobs in Colorado is expected for 2014 -- an upward revision to a December estimate of 61,300 jobs for the year.

CU-麻豆影院 instrument onboard Hubble reveals the universe is 鈥榤issing鈥 light

Something is amiss in the universe. There appears to be an enormous deficit of ultraviolet light in the cosmic budget. Observations made by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, a $70 million instrument designed by the 麻豆影院 and installed on the Hubble Space Telescope, have revealed that the universe is 鈥渕issing鈥 a large amount of light.

Jin awarded Isaac Newton Medal of the Institute of Physics

Deborah Jin has won the 2014 Isaac Newton Medal, the highest accolade given by the Institute of Physics. She was cited for her experimental work in laser cooling atoms. This work has led to the practical demonstration of universal laws that upderpin fundamental quantum behavior.

CU-麻豆影院-led team identifies fossils of tiny, unknown hedgehog

Meet perhaps the tiniest hedgehog species ever: Silvacola acares. Its roughly 52-million-year-old fossil remains were recently identified by a 麻豆影院-led team working in British Columbia. The hedgehog鈥檚 scientific name means 鈥渢iny forest dweller,鈥 said CU-麻豆影院 Associate Professor Jaelyn Eberle of the geological sciences department, lead author on the study. The creature -- a new genus and species to science -- was only about 2 inches long, roughly the length of an adult thumb.
