Last month in his annual State of the Campus address, Chancellor DiStefano reiterated our goal of achieving a six-year graduation rate of 80 percent by 2020. He spelled out clearly in the speech that this goal means we have to significantly increase the number of students we retain, and I want to outline the strategy we are employing to achieve that end.

Next week will see the campus celebrate the 20th annual Diversity and Inclusion Summit , to be hosted in the University Memorial Center on Nov. 11 and 12. I want to extend a personal invitation to each member of the campus community to attend this important two-day event. This summit raises awareness on the need for our campus to continually transform itself to become more diverse, more welcoming and more inclusive of individuals, communities and ideas.

Two NASA and one European spacecraft, including NASA’s MAVEN mission led by the Â鶹ӰԺ, have gathered new information about the basic properties of a wayward comet that buzzed by Mars Oct. 19, directly detecting its effects on the Martian atmosphere.

Your student government: Why the Diversity Summit matters to you

Since then, we have witnessed social progress in many areas but definitely not all. Therefore, I encourage you attend the Diversity and Inclusion Summit next week which will discuss civil rights in the past and civil rights today and engage in dialogues that will explore how as a collegiate community we can move forward toward a more equitable community.

Presented every four years, the Social Climate Survey provides the campus with an in-depth look at the experiences our students have inside and outside the classroom. How is the campus social climate is experienced by students with different interests, beliefs and social identities? The university values these differences and wants to make sure that all students feel welcome, accepted and free to express their views. Results from this survey inform campus decision-making, and those who complete the survey are making a vital contribution to our understanding of the campus climate. All students who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing for one of five $500 cash awards.
