As we look forward to Veterans Day this Tuesday, Nov. 11, I encourage you to take a moment and consider the debt of gratitude we owe our veterans. Without their service and dedication to our nation, our freedom and liberties would not be as secure as they are today. The adage that “freedom isn’t free” is true, and it is our veterans who have paid the highest price for that freedom.
In addition to their valuable service to our nation, veterans form an important segment of our campus community as students, faculty and staff. Their experiences enrich our environment of learning and fuel our aspirations to engage in debate and civil discourse, and their hard work and determination inspire us all.
For all these reasons, on Nov. 11, please don’t forget to thank a veteran, or visit the University of Colorado’s Memorial Center, which is dedicated to veterans, and tour the displays on the second floor west lobby that commemorate the service of CU veterans in past conflicts. I cordially invite you to attend the in the Folsom Field Stadium Club at 11 a.m. on Veteran’s Day.
Our campus community should be proud of the sacrifices of veterans past and present, and mindful that the spirit of free inquiry and discovery that fuel our mission owes it strength and reach to their character, courage and sacrifice.
Thank you,
Philip P. DiStefano, chancellor
