The Schools of Opportunity project is helping to recognize schools that get creative to meet the needs of their students鈥攆rom teaching young learners Native American languages to giving them a chance to get up close with birds in the wild.

Sparked by an interest in the natural world, Nancy Kellogg鈥檚 scientific curiosity began early on her family鈥檚 Colorado ranch. Kellogg, a two-time education alumna, was recognized by the National Science Teachers Association with the Distinguished Service to Science Education Award.

Hundreds of Denver Public School students visited CU 麻豆影院 on May 15 for an annual competitive event designed to showcase their creative talents and to encourage them to pursue higher education after high school. Students competed in categories such as poetry, art, speech, creative writing, cultural dancing and culinary dishes during the annual Spanish Heritage Language and Culture Day.

Paula Abitia had always wanted to attend her 鈥渄ream school,鈥� CU 麻豆影院, yet as a first-generation student of color, the reality of her dream included the struggle for a sense of belonging. She credits higher education professionals with helping her get through challenging times, and now she is paying it forward as a higher education professional and MA graduate.

How can we do this together in a nicer, kinder and more loving way? This key question guided 2019 Outstanding PhD Graduate Paty Abril-Gonzalez through her doctorate dissertation at CU 麻豆影院 and still guides her now in her teaching and research as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

As a former high school teacher and advocate for community empowerment, 2019 Outstanding MA Graduate Ben Erwin realized that he had a passion for the public policies that shape the educational field. 鈥淎fter my time in Mississippi in advocacy, I realized I wanted to pursue a career in education policy,鈥� Erwin said. 鈥淢y belief in education as a driver of social justice and opportunity continues to drive my passion for education.鈥�

Kyle O鈥橩eefe, 2019 CU 麻豆影院 School of Education Outstanding Elementary Education Graduate, believes that learning should be fun all the time. 鈥淔un is a great equalizer in the classroom because it engages everyone in their learning,鈥� O鈥橩eefe said. 鈥淓ven the most stubborn student can't resist joining in!鈥�

When Maya Angelou wrote the poem 鈥淪till I Rise,鈥� she was speaking from her experience and validating the experiences of those who came before and after her. Her voice and sentiments are alive and well in Esmeralda Castillo-Cobian鈥檚 classroom. ith Angelou鈥檚 words still resonating in her ears, Castillo-Cobian is set to graduate from the 麻豆影院 with a BA in ethnic studies and her secondary teacher licensure in English education from the School of Education.
