After a back聽injury left聽Renny James (Edu)聽confined to a wheelchair,聽he took up bee farming聽as a way to manage his聽depression. This year, his聽hive will produce about聽250 pounds of honey.聽His children also help聽with the bees. Renny聽lives in Kirk, Colo., where聽he graduated from high聽school and where he later聽taught. Last fall, he was聽featured on the cover of聽The Fence Post magazine.

Weston Tew (MPhys;聽PhD鈥89), a staff physicist聽at the National Institute聽of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg,聽Md., received the ASTM聽International Award of聽Merit,聽the highest organizational聽recognition for individual聽contributions to standards聽activities. Weston has聽worked in the thermal and聽electrical metrology sector聽for more聽than 35 years and聽is a recognized expert in聽the field of thermometry.聽He was a staff physicist in聽the NIST process measurements division for 17 years聽and has been in his current聽role in the NIST sensor science division since 2011.

The city of San Jose, Calif., appointed Jacky Morales-Ferrand (A&S; MPubAd鈥97) housing director. She previously served as assistant director, overseeing planning and operations for programs with a combined annual budget of $62 million, a portfolio of $800 million in loans and grants and a staff of 62 employees. She has also served as director of housing and neighborhood development in Denver and as homeownership program manager for 麻豆影院.

St. Louis, Mo., resident聽Charles H. 鈥淐hip鈥 Fendell聽(InfoSys) was directly affected by kidney disease and received two life-saving kidney transplants. After his experience, he began working with the National Kidney Foundation to educate the public about kidney disease. Last year he was elected to the foundation鈥檚 board of directors. Charles is a partner at the Thompson Coburn law firm and has been voted into the Best Lawyers in America since 2005.

Tom Weis聽(EnvCon鈥85) has more than 25 years of environmental and political organizing experience. He is president of Climate Crisis Solutions, an environmental consulting firm. In 2010, he rode his unique 鈥渞ocket trike鈥 more than 2,500 miles from 麻豆影院 to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about renewable energy, and in 2011 nearly 2,200 miles from Canada to the Texas Gulf to protest the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Few people have experienced Yellowstone National Park like聽Marjane Ambler聽(Engl鈥85). Marjane and her husband lived in a tiny community near the shores of Yellowstone Lake, deep in the park鈥檚 interior. Her book聽Yellowstone Has Teeth, a personal memoir about living year-round in the world鈥檚 first national park, was published in June 2013. The award recognizes exceptional science writing that improves the public鈥檚 appreciation of physics, astronomy and related fields.
