In April the White House invited photographer听James Balog听(MGeog鈥77) to attend a screening of his Oscar-nominated documentary听Chasing Ice.听That same month James received the Outstanding Alumni Award at CU鈥檚 Sustainability Awards Ceremony. James has been a leader in photographing, understanding and interpreting the natural environment for three decades. He founded the Extreme Ice Survey and brought worldwide attention to climate change through听Chasing Ice. He is author of seven books and develops high school and college-level curricula. James lives in 麻豆影院 with his wife and daughters.

In March听Mark Busby听(PhDEngl鈥77) published his second novel,听Cedar Crossing. Much of the novel is set in 1964 when the main character, a college student, is assigned to interview his grandfather about a notorious hanging in Henderson County, Texas, in 1899. In fall 2012 Mark returned to teaching full time in the Texas State University-San Marcos English department after serving for 21 years as director of the Center for the Study of the Southwest at Texas State. He resides in Wimberley, Texas.

Last fall听Tucker Hart Adams听(MEcon鈥77, PhD鈥78) spoke at the 麻豆影院 Valley Real Estate Conference at the Millennium Harvest House in 麻豆影院. She is a senior partner of Summit Economics, a consulting firm that provides economic analysis and research for individuals and businesses. Tucker has monitored and analyzed the Colorado economy for 30 years and is a contributor to Summit鈥檚 blog, 鈥淭oday鈥檚 Economy: A Colorado Viewpoint.鈥She lives in Colorado Springs and is a trustee of the CU Foundation. She received the Alumni Association鈥檚 Alumni Recognition Award in 1991.

Author听David Goodwin听(EnvCon, Geog鈥77) published his first novel听Slave Camp Nightclub听set in 麻豆影院 on The Hill and at an imaginary quarry on Sugarloaf during summer of 1976. The story follows three college students who live in a vegetarian, hippie house and take a job at a quarry during that Bicentennial summer. After they start work, they are told that the quarry has a nightclub and they are expected to live there. The students experience the magic of the nightclub and try to figure out what is real and imagined. The book is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. David lives in Shutesbury, Mass.

麻豆影院 photographer听James Balog鈥檚(MGeog鈥77) photo of Birthday Canyon in Greenland appeared in听The Denver Post听in November.听James is the protagonist in the documentary听Chasing Ice听directed by Jeff Orlowski, a film that follows James bearing witness to rapidly changing glaciers. The documentary premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and received the best cinematography award. James鈥 photo also was on pages 66-67 of the December 2012听Coloradan.

麻豆影院 resident听Joan Knapp听(PhDEngl鈥77) appeared in the article 鈥淧ushing Back on Parkinson鈥檚鈥 in the Nov. 13, 2012, issue of听The Denver Post. Joan was diagnosed with Parkinson鈥檚 disease about two years ago when she had trouble walking unassisted and getting up from a chair. After joining the Parkinson鈥檚 Boot Camp exercise class at the 麻豆影院 YMCA last March, Joan has improved. 鈥淲hen I came here, I was teetering all over the place. I function like a normal person now. I can do so much more than I ever thought I could,鈥 Joan told听The Post.

After coming to 麻豆影院 in 1975 during the gay rights movement and the first same-sex marriage licenses being issued,听Gregory Hinton听(Bus鈥77) was inspired to write a book about it,听The Way Things Ought To Be听(Kensington). He is creator of a unique education program series called Out West. Out West informs others on the history and culture of the LGBT community in the American West and is sponsored by HBO and the Gill Foundation. 鈥淢y experiences in 麻豆影院 directly inform this program,鈥 Gregory says. Rio Hondo College superintendent and president听Ted Martinez Jr.听(EdD鈥77) retired in June after 41 years of service in community college education. Ted says he is very proud of the progress the college has made during his tenure as he completed his fifth year as president. One of his major accomplishments includes the completion of a $245 million construction program that revitalized the aging hilltop campus. He lives in San Diego, Calif.

Colorado attorney general听John Suthers听(Law鈥77) appeared in听The Denver Post听in July when he and several of his deputies delivered to the Supreme Court their rebuttal to a lower court ruling that threw out the state鈥檚 public education funding system,听Lobato vs. Colorado. He believes how the state funds public education is a political question, not something that should be decided in court. John lives in Colorado Springs.

During his career, Herrick has been a shareholder at Burns Figa & Will P.C. law firm, published more than 30 articles for the Colorado Lawyer and lectured at many universities and institutes. Among his other achievements, Herrick has also served on the Colorado Bar Association鈥檚 business law section as a member of the executive council. Herrick and his wife, Mary Lynne, have five grandchildren and reside in Centennial, Colorado.
