Joe Garcia (IntlBus), Colorado鈥檚 former lieutenant governor, in February addressed a conference at CU 麻豆影院 about attracting more science-minded community college students to CU and, ultimately, to four-year colleges across America. Currently president of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, Joe also has served as president of CSU-Pueblo and Pikes Peak Community College and as executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education. He was lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2016.

After serving five years as Colorado鈥檚 lieutenant governor, Joe Garcia (IntlBus) has stepped down and will serve as president of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, a 麻豆影院-based advocacy organization. He also serves as executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education. Earlier in his career Joe was president of Colorado State University-Pueblo and Pikes Peak Community College. He served as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development secretary鈥檚 representative for the Rocky Mountain states, as executive director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies and was the first Hispanic partner in the 100-year history of Denver-based law firm Holme Roberts & Owen.

Ohio Super Lawyers magazine named R. Mark Jones (PolSci), a partner in Roetzel鈥檚 Cleveland office, a 2016 Ohio Super Lawyer in the defense category of personal injury and medical malpractice.

The Buffs鈥� first NCAA giant slalom champion, Stephan Hienzsch (Mktg), was inducted into this year鈥檚 class of the CU Athletic Hall of Fame. He won the slalom as a junior in 1977 and was the only collegiate skier invited to race in the World Cup Series that year. After his racing career, the four-time All-American served as the head coach and director of the United States Disabled Ski Team for four years while working for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.

Scott Thompson聽(Econ) was part of an investment group that purchased the Beverly Hills Country Club. The group will invest an additional $10 million to restore the club as one of the premier athletic and fitness clubs in Los Angeles. Scott is a real estate investor and transactional attorney in Westlake Village, Calif. Both of his children,聽Hailey Thompson聽(Mktg鈥�09) and聽Nathaniel Thompson聽(Fin鈥�12), are CU graduates also.

Fremont Insurance hired聽Rich Fasi聽(PolSci; MPubAd鈥�81) as vice president of marketing and sales. Rich brings 28 years of insurance industry experience to his position. He previously served as vice president of personal lines marketing for Harleysville Insurance Company鈥檚 Midwest region.

Colorado Lieutenant Governor聽Joseph Garcia聽(IntlBus) was sworn in for a second term on Tuesday, Jan. 13. He previously served as president of Colorado State University-Pueblo and as president of Pikes Peak Community College, Colorado鈥檚 second-largest community college. He received his law degree from Harvard University.

The Sunlight Foundation, an organization that uses technology to enable better democratic participation, named聽Chris Gates聽(Econ) of Washington, D.C., its president. For the past three decades, Chris has been a leading voice for strengthening democratic processes and developing new approaches to decision making. He aims to help build a nation of engaged, informed and empowered citizens.

Beth Ann Catalano聽(Mktg鈥�79) has been appointed president of AHAVA North America. AHAVA is a brand of Dead Sea mineral skincare products. Before this, she was senior vice president of sales, administration and education at the Steiner Leisure Corporation. Beth Ann has served as a guest speaker, lecturer and contributing editor for ABC, Bloomberg, FOX News and MSNBC.

Clinical psychologist聽Priscilla Dann-Courtney聽(Engl鈥�79, MPsych鈥�86, PhD鈥�91) wrote a column about the experience of sending her daughter, a CU student, on a Semester at Sea excursion. The time apart 鈥渨as quite a powerful experience in so many ways,鈥� writes Priscilla, who lives in 麻豆影院. The University of West Florida appointed聽Gregory Lanier聽(MCDBio鈥�79) dean of the newly formed University College, which helps prepare students for the workforce before and after graduation, among聽 other services. Previously, Gregory was an associate dean for the arts and sciences college, director for the Kugelman Honors Program and professor of honors in theater and English.

Scott P. Overmyer聽(Psych鈥�79) was named by Mount Washington College as vice provost and dean of the information technology school. Among other duties, Scott leads the information technology degree programs for the college鈥檚 national online program.

After serving as vice president for academic affairs and dean of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga.,聽Carolyn J. Stefanco聽(Hist鈥�79) was appointed the 11th president of the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. She started the position in July.

Ohio Super Lawyer Magazine named聽R. Mark Jones聽(PolSci鈥�79) a 鈥�2014 Ohio Super Lawyer.鈥� Mark is a partner at the Cleveland office of Roetzel & Andress and lives in University Heights, Ohio.

January was quite a successful month for聽Henry Kramer聽(Econ鈥�79), one could say. First, he won the Cyclocross World Championships in Gossau, Switzerland. And then, just five days later, he got back on the horse, errr 鈥� bike, in 麻豆影院 to win a national title. When he鈥檚 not traveling the country and the world, Kramer and his wife live in Menlo Park, Calif.

In January聽Sandy Husk聽(MEdu鈥�79, EdD鈥�89) became CEO of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). AVID is a nonprofit kindergarten-through-higher-education system that prepares students for four-year college eligibility. Sandy has served as a superintendent of various school districts for almost 18 years with a broad and deep experience helping underserved students from challenging backgrounds succeed academically. She lives in Salem, Ore.
