Susan Chandler (MAnth) has been聽elected to serve as the president of the Society for American Archaeology from 2017 to 2019. She and husband Alan Reed (Anth鈥�76; MA鈥�78) are retired from Alpine Archaeological Consultants, the cultural resource company they founded in 1987. Two of Alpine鈥檚 new owners are also CU alums: son Charles Reed (Anth鈥�05) and Rand Greubel (础苍迟丑鈥�84).

In December Brian Campbell (IntlAf) was elected Mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes (RPV), a suburb of Los Angeles. He鈥檚 served as an elected councilmember since 2009 and as vice mayor twice. Brian was an Army ROTC graduate and served overseas as an infantry officer after graduating from CU. He serves in the California State Military Reserve and is the executive officer of the Special Operations Support Detachment. Brian is also CEO of BC Urban LLC, a commercial real estate firm. He and his wife have two teenage sons.

Gordon Trafton (TransMgmt) was appointed to the board of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He served as a special advisor to the Canadian National Railway leadership team until 2010 and has held several leadership positions with Illinois Central Railroad and Burlington Northern Railroad. At CU he is chairman of the Leeds School鈥檚 Board of Alumni and Friends.

Director of the 麻豆影院 Jazz Dance Workshop (BJDW) Lara Branen (Dance; MA鈥�87) has been directing its workshops since the first session at the Chautauqua Community Hall in 1978 and has seen the group expand from fewer than 20 students to about 150. Lara, who lives in Northern California, flies into 麻豆影院 for a month to direct the workshop, which she says has developed a reputation as 鈥渁 college-based summer dance study setting with heart.鈥� The BJDW was started by Lara and Michael Geiger (MDance鈥�78) and is still run mainly by CU alumni.

Carol Callan (MPE; MBA鈥�87) is USA Basketball women鈥檚 national team director and chair of the USA Basketball聽women鈥檚 national team player selection committee. She played a key role in picking the players for the U.S. Women鈥檚 National team for the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. Carol has been the women鈥檚 national team director since 1996.

In February,聽Debra Bean聽(Anth, Art) was named聽president of John F.聽Kennedy University. She聽previously served as provost of National University,聽the second-largest聽nonprofit university in聽California. Debra also聽served as associate dean聽at the Columbia College,聽School of Media Arts. She聽has held management聽positions in the fields of聽strategic marketing, media聽and online brand development for clients such as聽American Airlines, msnbc.com and Nike.

Catherine Zublin (Comm) has been appointed interim dean of the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities at Weber State University. She has worked for Weber State for 30 years, first as a theater professor and then as associate dean of the arts and humanities college. She also has been the lead costume designer for more than 50 theater productions.

Former Colorado attorney general and current Colorado Springs mayor John Suthers (Law) was granted the Silver Spur award by the Pikes Peak Range Riders, a group that supports the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. The annual award honors an outstanding citizen. John has also served as U.S. attorney for the District of Colorado and executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections. He was sworn in as mayor in June. John and his wife, Janet Suthers (PolSci鈥�73; MBA鈥�89), have two grown daughters.

Debra Jason (MCommDisor) published Millionaire Marketing on a Shoestring Budget this year. The book, which received an EVVY Award from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association, provides business advice for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Debra started her own company, The Write Direction, in 1989.

The digital money transfer provider Xoom appointed聽Chris Shimojima聽(IntlAf) to its board of directors. He will work as an independent board member, serving on the compensation and nominating and corporate governance committees. Chris is the CEO of Provide Commerce, a floral and gifting e-commerce retailer, and previously served as the vice president of global e-commerce at Nike for six years.

Jamie Forbes鈥� (Phil) collection of short stories,聽The Widow Smalls and Other Stories, was published by Pronghorn Press in 2014. Her first book,聽Unbroken, won the 2011 WILLA literary award for outstanding contemporary fiction. Jamie lives and practices law in Greensboro, N.C.
Ellen McCormick聽(MCDBio; MD鈥�81) retired from her medical practice after nearly 20 years. She closed Pediatric Associates of Ca帽on City last May. She and her husband are planning a move to Denver to be closer to family.

Kant in Hong Kong听颈蝉听Gray Kochhar-Lindgren鈥檚 (Phil鈥�77) book about how travel, philosophy and the city connect, drawing inspiration from the regular city walks of philosopher Immanuel Kant. Gray is professor and director of the Common Core curriculum at the University of Hong Kong. He previously served as associate vice chancellor for undergraduate learning and professor of interdisciplinary arts and sciences at the University of Washington Bothell.

If he weren鈥檛 an attorney,聽William Nelson聽(PolSci鈥�77) told the聽Colorado Springs Business Journal, he would be a landscaper or nurse so he wouldn鈥檛 have to wear a tie. But he wears that tie well as a partner in the Colorado Springs location of the firm Lewis Roca Rothberger. He began as a law clerk in 1981.

District court judge聽Morris Hoffman聽(Math鈥�74, Law鈥�77) recently published a book,聽The Punisher鈥檚 Brain, which discusses the science behind why people punish and forgive each other. Morris was appointed to the Denver District Court in December 1990. He also is an adjunct faculty member for CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 law school. Morris lives in Denver with his wife,聽Kate Knickrehm听(尝补飞鈥�82).

Federal judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado聽Christie Martinez Arguello聽(Edu鈥�77) was inducted into the Colorado Women鈥檚 Hall of Fame in March. She also leads the Arguello Dream Team, which mentors and inspires young people to pursue a college and graduate degree. Nominated by President George W. Bush as a federal judge, she lives in the Denver area.

Denver resident聽Ron Binz聽(MMath鈥�77) was President Obama鈥檚 nominee for chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) before he withdrew from consideration in October. FERC is an independent commission of five members who regulate the interstate transmission of natural gas, oil and electricity. Members handle proposals to build natural gas pipelines and licensing for hydropower projects. Ron has directed Colorado鈥檚 Office of Consumer Counsel, served as president of the nonprofit Competition Policy Institute and worked as chairman of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

President Obama announced聽Daniel Smith聽(Hist鈥�77) as nominee for assistant secretary for intelligence and research for the Department of State. Previously Daniel served as executive secretary of the state department from 2007-2010 and the U.S. ambassador to Greece from 2010 to 2013. His overseas service includes tours in Bern, Istanbul, Ottawa and Stockholm. Daniel taught political science at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

John Hicks聽(CivEngr鈥�77) lives northeast of Sacramento near Nevada City and Grass Valley on a small horse ranch. He works as an engineering contractor on flood control projects throughout California鈥檚 Central Valley.

In April the White House invited photographer聽James Balog聽(MGeog鈥�77) to attend a screening of his Oscar-nominated documentary聽Chasing Ice.聽That same month James received the Outstanding Alumni Award at CU鈥檚 Sustainability Awards Ceremony. James has been a leader in photographing, understanding and interpreting the natural environment for three decades. He founded the Extreme Ice Survey and brought worldwide attention to climate change through聽Chasing Ice. He is author of seven books and develops high school and college-level curricula. James lives in 麻豆影院 with his wife and daughters.

In March聽Mark Busby聽(PhDEngl鈥�77) published his second novel,聽Cedar Crossing. Much of the novel is set in 1964 when the main character, a college student, is assigned to interview his grandfather about a notorious hanging in Henderson County, Texas, in 1899. In fall 2012 Mark returned to teaching full time in the Texas State University-San Marcos English department after serving for 21 years as director of the Center for the Study of the Southwest at Texas State. He resides in Wimberley, Texas.
