CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Student Wins Goldwater Scholarship

A University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ student has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar through a selective national merit scholarship competition. Alan Arrowsmith, a junior majoring in biochemistry and mathematics from Waterloo, Ontario, was one of 316 students awarded scholarships this year by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Arrowsmith will receive up to $7,500 for his tuition, fees, books and room and board expenses for the 1998-99 academic year.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Students Participate In Events During National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week honors people who participate in volunteer community service and calls attention to the on-going need for individuals and groups to serve in their communities. Professor Lorrie Shepard, interim dean of education at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has been elected president of the American Educational Research Association, the most prominent national and international organization devoted to advancing educational research.

Attorney Sonny Flowers, Area High School Students Receive CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Awards

Sonny Flowers, a well-known Â鶹ӰԺ attorney who has been active in Â鶹ӰԺ and Denver civic pursuits for more than two decades, will receive the 1998 Community Service Award from the Â鶹ӰԺ Chapter of the University of Colorado Alumni Association at a reception on Sunday, April 26. FlowersÂ’ recognition is part of the annual Scholarship Tea, hosted by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ alumni chapter at the Koenig Alumni Center at Broadway and University Avenue from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Preliminary Results Positive For CU Faculty/Staff Ecopass

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ faculty and staff drive to campus less, hold fewer campus parking permits and ride RTD, Skip and Hop buses more since the university initiated an EcoPass program for its employees Jan. 1. The pilot program allows unlimited free rides on all RTD buses, including the Skip and Hop services, for more than 5,600 full-time and part-time faculty and staff at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ. The program was made possible through a partnership between the university, the city of Â鶹ӰԺ and RTD.

Four CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Faculty Win Guggenheim Fellowships

Four University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ faculty have received prestigious Guggenheim fellowships for the 1998-99 academic year. The grants were announced this week by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in New York. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ faculty receiving the awards are Mitchell Begelman, professor and chair of astrophysical and planetary sciences; Albert Chong, associate professor of fine arts; Steven Epstein, professor of history; and Russell Monson, professor of environmental, population and organismic biology.

New Candidate Announced For Dean Of Business College

Professor Jerry Zimmerman of the University of Rochester has withdrawn his candidacy for dean of the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ College of Business and Administration, citing personal reasons. "He spoke very highly of the college and of the opportunity for a new dean here," said Harold Bruff, dean of the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Law School and chair of the search committee. "He wishes us the best of luck in our search."
