Distinguished Professor Carl Wieman of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has been elected a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences, becoming the 11th CU faculty member to receive the honor. Wieman, an internationally renowned physicist, was the only new member to be elected from Colorado this year. He is a fellow of JILA, a joint institute of CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Graduate School will honor a number of outstanding graduate students May 5 for their research and creative work, graduate teaching excellence and scholarly activity. The event, which will be held at Fiske Planetarium from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., also will recognize CU-Â鶹ӰԺ’s top graduate students receiving various fellowships and scholarships. The event is open to the public.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Professor Allan Collins has received a prestigious MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health to continue his research analyzing genetic links between alcohol and nicotine addiction.

ItÂ’s a good time to be graduating with a degree in business – especially in Colorado. "As the job market goes, this is as good as it gets," said Ann Stringfellow, director of career development and employer relations at the College of Business and Administration at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ. Stringfellow says local and national job prospects are plentiful for both graduate and undergraduate business students.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ WomenÂ’s Center awarded four scholarships to dedicated female students who showed high academic merit. Applications for the Center for Education and Career Transition Scholarships were evaluated on the basis of financial need and academic performance. Professor J. Dennis Hynes has received the 1997-98 University of Colorado School of Law Excellence in Teaching Award. Hynes was selected by the law student body "in appreciation of the outstanding and exceptional effort to enhance studentsÂ’ educational experience." Hynes has been a law instructor at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ since 1970 and specializes in agency and partnership law, contract law and legal history. This year he taught the basic courses in the law of contracts to entering students and the advanced course in agency and partnership law.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will offer art and museum exhibits as well as dance and musical performances this summer in communities from ColoradoÂ’s western slope to its eastern plains. Now in its 10th year, CU-Â鶹ӰԺ’s popular outreach program, "CU This Summer," will provide cultural and artistic presentations in 14 Colorado cities and towns.

Adult literacy students in the city of Â鶹ӰԺ’s "Learning to Read" program are learning more than reading and writing this spring – theyÂ’re learning to send electronic mail and log onto the Internet as well. A new service-learning project of the linguistics department at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ pairs CU-Â鶹ӰԺ undergraduates with adult literacy students, augmenting the assistance provided by their regularly assigned tutors.

The Renewable Resources Journal has devoted an entire issue to an article by Albert Bartlett, a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ professor emeritus and one of the worldÂ’s leading experts on population growth, that attempts to define the term "sustainability."

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will host a series of events during the fourteenth National Science and Technology Week from April 27 to May 2. This yearÂ’s theme is "Polar Connections: Exploring the WorldÂ’s Natural Laboratories." The weekÂ’s purpose is to "engage the American public in the spirit of learning and adventure that is the hallmark of science and engineering." It is a major outreach effort by the National Science Foundation. Public lectures for general audiences will be held April 27 through April 29 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Duane Physics G020.
