The University of Colorado Environmental Center has been awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection AgencyÂ’s 2000 Climate Protection Award for its student-led effort to make CU-Â鶹ӰԺ a model for university efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ was the only university among 19 international companies, organizations and individuals presented with the award at an Oct. 31 ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Earthworks, a program of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has received an environmental education partnership award from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education in the Higher Education category. An outreach program of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), Earthworks helps middle and high school teachers transfer new science content and teaching strategies into the classroom, said Alex Weaver, director of the CIRES K-12 Outreach Program.

As the nation approaches the fifth anniversary of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, CU-Â鶹ӰԺ will host two preeminent telecommunications policymakers to discuss some of the actÂ’s successes and failures and where the industry goes from here.

Andrea Larson has joined the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Ombuds Office as a half-time associate ombudsperson, Director Tom Sebok announced. Mary Chavez, the current associate ombudsperson, has reduced her appointment to half time in order to spend more time with her daughter and work on her doctoral dissertation. Larson also will continue to serve as counselor-in-residence in the Williams Village residence halls, a joint program sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Housing Department and Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center.

For centuries people have attempted to prove the existence of planets circling distant stars, but on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will explore the topic more closely than ever before. "Searching For Distant Worlds," a prerecorded program at Fiske Planetarium, will explain recent discoveries of unknown of planets in newfound solar systems. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m. the night of the show with prices ranging from $4 for adults and $3 for seniors age 65 and over and children, 12 and under.

An 18-year-old student at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ was diagnosed Friday with meningococcal meningitis. A freshman at Stearns-West Residence Hall at Williams Village on the Â鶹ӰԺ campus, he is in Â鶹ӰԺ Community Hospital in stable condition. University and Â鶹ӰԺ County Health Department officials are investigating the single case and report that no other cases of the disease have been identified. State health authorities also were notified.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ anthropology Assistant Professor Stephen Lekson will continue the Fall 2000 ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture Series on Wednesday, Nov. 8, with his talk, "Has CU Solved the Mystery of the Anasazi?"

A memorial service for Terri Bodhaine, director of Disability Services at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, will be held on Nov. 7 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Old Main Chapel. Bodhaine died of cancer on Sept. 24th at Hospice of Â鶹ӰԺ County in Louisville. She was 53.

The Oct. 30 music recital at The Academy has been cancelled. University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ music students will continue to present free recitals every Monday evening from Nov. 6 through Dec. 4 at The Academy, 970 Aurora Ave. in Â鶹ӰԺ. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel and are free and open to the public. The recital series is sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Office of Community Affairs and the College of Music.
