Academic Involvement
CLASP VGSs and VSs may participate in a variety of activities around campus, many of which are detailed below:
- Course audit.
- VGSs are welcome to email faculty to request to audit their course for a given semester. There is no guarantee that VGSs will be allowed to audit, and the individual faculty member will set expectations for the VGSs’ level of involvement in their course. Visiting scholars may enroll in a course through Continuing Ed, the Community Auditor program. (You cannot register for the course until the semester drop/add time, about 1.5 weeks after semester starts.) More information can be found on the .
- Additionally, the VGS may also audit a course informally for no cost (not through the Continuing Ed program), again with the instructor’s permission. Your faculty sponsor will be able to help you decide which audit option is most appropriate.
- CLASP Working Group. The CLASP Working Group meets bi-weekly throughout the semester to discuss recent publications and host data sessions. More information is available through the CLASP listserv.
- Linguistics department Graduate Research Workshop. VGSs are welcome to attend the Linguistic department’s bi-weekly Graduate Research Workshop (GRoW). Themes for GRoW change each semester, but generally the group functions as a writing and accountability group for graduate students. - CLASP Conference. Visting Scholars are welcome to submit an abstract or participate in the planning committee, as appropriate, for the
- LING Circles. Linguistics Circle (LingCircle) is a weekly to biweekly colloquium and workshop series sponsored by the CU Linguistics Department.
- Graduate Anthropology Conference. The Department of Anthropology sponsors an annual graduate student conference.
- Department of Communication workshops on professional development.

All CLASP-affiliated departments host additional conferences, colloquia, workshops, and speaking events; additionally, the CU campus also hosts a variety of research groups for particular subject and focus areas. Your faculty mentor will be able to provide you with additional information.
