OPT Spotlight Series: Ahmed AlAzri (Mothers Against Drunk Driving - MADD)

Ahmed AlAzri is a CU 麻豆影院 graduate who is currently gaining experience while on Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT).  ISSS reached out to Azri to ask about the type of training he is doing and how鈥痯ost-completion鈥疧PT has helped him gain practical training in his major field of study (Information Science).鈥疘SSS is鈥痚xcited to spotlight Azri鈥檚 experience and advice for other students in F-1 status who might be planning to apply for鈥Post-Completion OPT鈥痑苍诲鈥STEM OPT.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

Azri is volunteering with MADD, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting victims of impaired driving, collecting statistics on the consequences of impaired driving, educating the public, and advocating for more effective DUI and DWAI laws.

When asked what kind of work he is doing with MADD, Azri said, 鈥淚 joined MADD Colorado court monitoring program, specifically the data unit, as a volunteer to help them with their data collection, mining, and analyzing data related to impaired driving offenses that pass through Colorado court in 14 counties in efforts to identify areas of improvement within the court system and DUI laws as well as enhance transparency and accountability within the justice system.鈥 

He added, 鈥淲e also visualize our data and create reports to solicit further dialogue [with] MADD Colorado鈥檚 law enforcement, prosecution, and judicial partners to strengthen Colorado impaired driving laws and sentences. The program increases public awareness through community volunteers, educational outreach programs, and access to annual reports, which helps to shift public perception of intoxicated driving offenses and the associated consequences.鈥

Azri notes that 鈥淧ost-completion OPT has allowed me to apply the skills acquired during my studies in a real-world professional setting and gain work experience. It has been pivotal in my transition to the work environment and significantly expanded my job options.鈥

Students in F-1 status are eligible to apply for post-completion OPT after they have completed all degree requirements or after completion of all coursework (excluding thesis or dissertation credits). The first day that students in F-1 status can apply for OPT is 90 days before the last day of enrollment in the final semester. The last day students in F-1 status can apply is 60 days after the last day of enrollment. 

Azri has great insights to share with other students looking to gain practical experience in their field of study.  He advises, 鈥淔or students interested in post-completion OPT, proactive planning during their senior year is essential. 

鈥淲hile some employers may not be familiar with OPT, there are plenty who are eager to hire OPT candidates. Ensure to inform potential employers about your OPT status and that you don't require sponsorship. 

鈥淏egin applying to jobs well before graduation, ideally at the start of your senior year, to allow enough time for the interview process and secure a job by your OPT start date. The 90-day unemployment rule may not be sufficient, so starting early can alleviate stress. 

鈥淯迟颈濒颈锄别 Quinncia resume AI (available to all CU students) to optimize your resume for ATS screening, as many employers use ATS to filter out resumes. Remember, if you're not receiving any interview invitations, your resume is probably not passing ATS.

鈥淜eep a well-crafted cover letter ready at all times, tailoring it to each job description to stand out from other applicants.

鈥淐ontact your references in advance, aiming for at least three available at all times,or at the very least, one reliable reference. 

鈥淪tay consistent with your job applications, as every application could lead to your next opportunity. Rejections are a part of the process, don't get discouraged!鈥

ISSS supports students before their OPT journey by providing step by step instructions for seeking OPT authorization, reviewing their application materials, and issuing the I-20 that recommends OPT. During the OPT authorization, students can and should take advantage of ISSS resourcesworkshops, and advising opportunities to understand reporting and status maintenance requirements associated with an OPT authorization.
