Juneteenth
This newly confirmed holiday is celebrated each year on June 19th, and recognizes the end of the Civil War which freed enslaved people. The reason Juneteenth is celebrated on the 19th of June each year, is due to the history of to inform the public about enslaved people鈥檚 freedom on June 19, 1865. Although President Lincoln had signed the on January 1, 1863, it took another two and a half years for the news of freedom to reach Texas, which at the time enslaved nearly 250,000 people.
General Order Number 3, the bill signed by President Lincoln, was read to the people of Texas on June 19th. It read, "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."
