This guiding principle is intended to ensure that quality in offered courses remains high and that faculty have time to remain current in both their subject area and technology, adequate time to meet with individual students, and time to grade substantive written work.

Academic Teaching Allowances for Tenure-Track & Non-Tenure / Teaching Track Faculty

Full-time tenured, tenure-track, and instructional faculty may teach one additional course per semester above the standard teaching expectation for their department, including courses taught on all CU campuses and through Continuing Education with the exception that self-paced courses taught through Continuing Education do not count against teaching limits. Faculty members holding Chair/Director and Associate Chair/Associate Director appointments are not eligible for overloads.

Summer Session Teaching Allowances

Summer session teaching appointments normally will be approved for no more than one course during each summer session term. Concurrent course teaching in overlapping terms is discouraged. When a faculty member is teaching a one-credit hour course (such as a field study, seminar, or lab course), the faculty member may elect to teach up to three one-credit courses during a summer session term.

Administrative Appointments

Faculty on administrative appointments (Chair, Faculty Director, Associate Chair/Associate Faculty Director, etc.) often are given some form of teaching release in order to handle the increased service workload. Faculty members holding Chair,ÌýAssociate Chair,ÌýFaculty Directors, and Faculty Associate Director appointments are not eligible for overloads.

When a faculty member holds an administrative appointment, their merit formula will be revised for the time they are in that particular administrative appointment.

Grant-Funded Course Buyouts

Faculty using grant funds to buy out of a course may not be paid for overloads.

Process for Generating an Additional Job LetterÌý

Unit submits a draft additional job letter to CEAS HR team via a for review.

  1. Draft offer letter reviewed by CEAS HR team, and they will advise unit of any changes or needed corrections with instructions to re-submit for review once changes made (if applicable).
  2. Once approved by the CEAS HR team, approved offer letter saved as PDF and the CEAS HR team will route via DocuSign for signatures. Initiating unit and the Service Center will receive a copy of the completed letter.
  3. Unit submits the appointment to the Service Center for entry into HCM.

Administrative Appointments

Department Chairs and Program Directors

Selection of the incoming chair/faculty director should be determined during the spring semester to ensure the appointments can be processed prior to the start date of July 1. The unit should work in conjunction with unit bylaws and the dean when selecting a new chair/faculty director.

A 20% AY administrative stipend is typically provided to each department chair; a 10% AY administrative stipend is typically provided to each program director.Ìý

The department chair and program directors should develop a set of annual performance goals with the dean.Ìý

Associate Chairs and Associate Program Directors

Selection of incoming associate chair/associate program directors should be determined during the spring semester to ensure the appointments can be processed prior to the start date of July 1. The unit should work in conjunction with unit bylaws and report these appointments to the dean for concurrence.

A 5% AY administrative stipend is provided to each Associate Chair and each Associate Program Director.

Associate Chairs and Associate Program Directors should develop a set of annual performance goals with the Chair or Program Director.

Endowed Appointments

Endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships are among the highest recognitions that the College of Engineering and Applied Science can bestow upon a faculty member. Such appointments are an honor to the named holder of the appointment and a tribute to the benefactor who established it. CEAS faculty who presently hold an endowed appointment are recognized on the college website.

The college has a limited number of such appointments and so designation can only be made to the highest-performing faculty.

An annual selection process is conducted in the spring semester. In this process, the Dean solicits inputs from all Department Chairs and the Associate Dean for Faculty Advancement (ADFA). After discussion with the Chairs and the ADFA, the Dean makes assignments of open endowed appointments in a manner consistent with the intent of the benefactor and the performance of the faculty. Appointments may be renewed, made to faculty within the college, or to faculty joining the college. Appointments are generally made for a term of four years with a July 1 start date and are renewable based on performance.

Three types of endowed appointments exist within CEAS. Endowed fellowships are characterized by a maximum 5% AY salary stipend, a small amount of discretionary funding, or both. Endowed professorships are characterized by a maximum 10% AY salary stipend and a small to moderate amount of discretionary funding. Endowed chairs are characterized by a maximum 15% AY salary stipend and a moderate to large amount of discretionary funding. In all cases, the total funding provided is equal to or less than the distribution of funds made available from the CU Foundation (averaged over the term of the appointment to include anticipated salary increases).

Department chairs are encouraged to announce all new endowed appointments in the first department meeting of the fall semester.
