After working in higher education for 40 years as president of Black Hills State University,听Kay Schallenkamp(PhDComDisor鈥�82) will retire in spring 2014. She led BHSU in becoming the first state university president to join the American College and University President鈥檚 Climate Commitment. Under her seven-year tenure, the university鈥檚 student union and life sciences laboratory received LEED Gold certification. Kay lives in Spearfish, S.D.

On July 3听Tim Roessler听(Jour鈥�82) and his wife Tanya Roessler celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Paris. The couple met on a blind date at the Broker Inn. Tim is a writer and content strategist. They have two children and enjoy hiking, hunting for wild mushrooms, reading, making short films, traveling and attending their son鈥檚 concerts and their daughter鈥檚 art openings.

After taking a one-year hiatus in the 2012-13 season to spend more time with her mother, Gail announced she will return to Monarch High School as the girls鈥� basketball head coach. 鈥淛ust not to be in that capacity this past winter was pretty unusual and pretty strange,鈥� Gail told BoCoPreps.com. She lives in Lafayette, Colo.

Cloud computing expert听John Joyner听(Bus鈥�82) had his fourth book published,听System Center 2012 Operations Manager Unleashed.听It is the first comprehensive operations manager 2012 technical resource for every IT implementer and administrator. He writes a weekly technology column for听CBS-Interactive听in the TechRepublic Enterprise Cloud and Datacenter spaces. He also is an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas and teaches a cloud infrastructure management course. John lives in Little Rock.

In 2012听Michael Williams听(MEcon鈥�82, PhD鈥�83) hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from the U.S.-Mexico border beginning in Campo, Calif., to Manning Park, British Columbia. He departed April 21 from Campo and arrived in Manning Park on Sept. 20. The hike covered about 3,000 miles. While hiking Michael turned 65, became eligible for Medicare and interviewed for a job. He lives in Atlanta.

At the Leeds School of Business Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards Ceremony in November听Ellen Balaguer听(Fin,Psych鈥�82),听George Solich* (Bus鈥�83, MMktg鈥�91) and听Peter Burridge听(Econ鈥�85) received recognition for service to the school and exceptional achievements in business. Ellen lives in Greenwood Village, Colo., as does George. Peter lives in 麻豆影院.

On July 12听Ruth Kahn听(Mktg鈥�82), a partner at Steptoe & Johnson, received Bet Tzedek鈥檚 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award at the organization鈥檚 annual Evening of Recognition at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. Ruth was honored for her extensive service to holocaust survivors on whose behalf she has obtained reparations from the German government for labor performed during World War II. She lives in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Colorado Super Lawyer listed听James R. Christoph听(Law鈥�82) as a 2012 Super Lawyer in the field of personal injury law. This is the sixth consecutive year that James has received this recognition as one of the top personal injury lawyers in Colorado. He lives in 麻豆影院.

For the fifth time since 2006,听Ruth Kahn听(Mktg鈥�82), a partner in Steptoe & Johnson鈥檚 Los Angeles office, was named last year to the听Daily Journal鈥檚听list of the Top 75 Women Litigators in California. Ruth was recognized for her toxic tort victories for Exxon Mobil and Texaco Downstream Properties, Union Oil Co. of California, Chevron Corp. and Shell Oil.

A Hutchinson Black and Cook lawyer,听Brad Peterson听(Law鈥�82) was named a Colorado Super Lawyer for 2012. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas. Brad lives in 麻豆影院.

Director鈥檚 Guild of America member听Matt Marshall听(Comm, PolSci鈥�82) completed听The Amazing Spiderman听in Los Angeles to be released this summer. He also has found success on听Malcolm in the Middle,听Baywatch,听Perry Mason Returns,听Diagnosis Murder,听Air Force One听and听October Sky.

Architect听Kat Vlahos听(EnvDes鈥�82, MA鈥�84) is an associate professor at CU Denver in the College of Architecture and Planning and is director of the Center of Preservation Research. She is a researcher of vernacular ranch architecture and cultural landscapes. After a career of designing, she told听CU Connections听(CU鈥檚 faculty and staff newsletter), 鈥淚 design through my students now.鈥� The Denver resident has twin boys.

Former CU-麻豆影院 Alumni Association board member听Jenny Herring听(Jour鈥�82) serves as public relations director at The Creative Alliance firm in Lafayette, Colo. She lives in Longmont.

In 2000 brothers and former CU track and cross country athletes听Dan King听(ChemEngr鈥�82, MBA鈥�88) and听Scott King听(ElEngr鈥�85) co-founded ReadyTalk, a Denver company that develops audio and web conferencing technology. Earning the 2011听Colorado Business Magazine鈥檚听Best Company to Work for in Colorado, the company staffers attribute their success to Dan and Scott鈥檚 focus on motivating people to be innovative and creative. Dan lives in 麻豆影院 and Scott lives in Longmont. In July Dan won the World Masters Athletics Championships in California.

Computer analyst听Cynthia Wooten听(Mus鈥�82) works for Kitsap Mental Health Services and lives in Bremerton, Wash.

James听Michael听Brodie (Engl鈥�83) is president of The Black and听Gold Project Foundation,听a group of CU 麻豆影院听alumni that supports听increasing the percentage of African American听students, faculty and
administration at the听university. On June 25,听James and the foundation celebrated the听40-year career of professor William King. William听began teaching Black听Studies at CU in 1972听and went on to become听the director of the Black听Studies program. He also听was a founding member听of the National Council听for Black Studies and听eventually served as its听national chairman. At the听luncheon, Gary Jackson听(PolSci鈥�67; Law鈥�70),听retired senior judge听of the Denver County听Court and former Denver听district attorney, spoke听and said, 鈥�(Dr. King) was听more than a legacy. He听was a role model that all听of us in this room could听pattern our lives after.鈥�

Founder and principal听of Kipnis Architecture听+ Planning (KAP), Nate听Kipnis (EnvDes鈥�83) 鈥� a听fellow of the American听Institute of Architects听(AIA) 鈥� was honored as听one of Crain鈥檚 Chicago听Business鈥� 2022 Notable听Leaders in Sustainability.听The award category honors chief sustainability听officers, top executives,听nonprofit leaders and听entrepreneurs who are听leading the way in sustainable business. KAP,听which has locations in听麻豆影院 and Evanston,听Illinois, is recognized as听a premier firm in sustainable architecture.听Additionally, Nate serves听on the AIA Climate Action听and Design Committee.

Intellectual property law firm Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds elected Mary Lou Wakimura (ApMath鈥�83) as chair of its board of directors. Mary Lou plans to use her 35 years of experience at the firm and her patent prosecution and operational expertise in her new role. She lives in Atkinson, New Hampshire.

Evans Scholar Gary Baine (Jour鈥�83) was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in fall 2021. A fixture in Colorado golf journalism, Gary has covered major golf events across the state, including each of the last 38 Colorado Opens, all 21 Internationals at Castle Pines, two U.S. and three U.S. Women鈥檚 Opens, a Solheim Cup and many other events. Gary worked at the Daily Camera in 麻豆影院 for 25 years, including six as sports editor. He is a regular contributor to the Colorado Golf Association鈥檚 website and founded Colorado Golf Journal in 2008. His work has won several Colorado golf journalism awards, and most recently he was honored with the 2019 Robert Kirchner Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the Colorado golf community.
