After working in higher education for 40 years as president of Black Hills State University,听Kay Schallenkamp(PhDComDisor鈥82) will retire in spring 2014. She led BHSU in becoming the first state university president to join the American College and University President鈥檚 Climate Commitment. Under her seven-year tenure, the university鈥檚 student union and life sciences laboratory received LEED Gold certification. Kay lives in Spearfish, S.D.

On July 3听Tim Roessler听(Jour鈥82) and his wife Tanya Roessler celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Paris. The couple met on a blind date at the Broker Inn. Tim is a writer and content strategist. They have two children and enjoy hiking, hunting for wild mushrooms, reading, making short films, traveling and attending their son鈥檚 concerts and their daughter鈥檚 art openings.

After taking a one-year hiatus in the 2012-13 season to spend more time with her mother, Gail announced she will return to Monarch High School as the girls鈥 basketball head coach. 鈥淛ust not to be in that capacity this past winter was pretty unusual and pretty strange,鈥 Gail told BoCoPreps.com. Cloud computing expert听John Joyner听(Bus鈥82) had his fourth book published,System Center 2012 Operations Manager Unleashed.It is the first comprehensive operations manager 2012 technical resource for every IT implementer and administrator. He writes a weekly technology column for听CBS-Interactive听in the TechRepublic Enterprise Cloud and Datacenter spaces. He also is an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas and teaches a cloud infrastructure management course. John lives in Little Rock.

In 2012听Michael Williams听(MEcon鈥82, PhD鈥83) hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from the U.S.-Mexico border beginning in Campo, Calif., to Manning Park, British Columbia. He departed April 21 from Campo and arrived in Manning Park on Sept. 20. The hike covered about 3,000 miles. While hiking Michael turned 65, became eligible for Medicare and interviewed for a job. He lives in Atlanta.

On July 12听Ruth Kahn听(Mktg鈥82), a partner at Steptoe & Johnson, received Bet Tzedek鈥檚 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award at the organization鈥檚 annual Evening of Recognition at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. Ruth was honored for her extensive service to holocaust survivors on whose behalf she has obtained reparations from the German government for labor performed during World War II. She lives in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Architect听Kat Vlahos听(EnvDes鈥82, MA鈥84) is an associate professor at CU Denver in the College of Architecture and Planning and is director of the Center of Preservation Research. She is a researcher of vernacular ranch architecture and cultural landscapes. After a career of designing, she told听CU Connections听(CU鈥檚 faculty and staff newsletter), 鈥淚 design through my students now.鈥 The Denver resident has twin boys.

Earning the 2011听Colorado Business Magazine鈥檚听Best Company to Work for in Colorado, the company staffers attribute their success to Dan and Scott鈥檚 focus on motivating people to be innovative and creative. Dan lives in 麻豆影院 and Scott lives in Longmont. In July Dan won the World Masters Athletics Championships in California.

James听Michael听Brodie (Engl鈥83) is president of The Black and听Gold Project Foundation,听a group of CU 麻豆影院听alumni that supports听increasing the percentage of African American听students, faculty and
administration at the听university. On June 25,听James and the foundation celebrated the听40-year career of professor William King. William听began teaching Black听Studies at CU in 1972听and went on to become听the director of the Black听Studies program. He also听was a founding member听of the National Council听for Black Studies and听eventually served as its听national chairman. At the听luncheon, Gary Jackson听(PolSci鈥67; Law鈥70),听retired senior judge听of the Denver County听Court and former Denver听district attorney, spoke听and said, 鈥(Dr. King) was听more than a legacy. He听was a role model that all听of us in this room could听pattern our lives after.鈥

Evans Scholar Gary Baine (Jour鈥83) was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in fall 2021. A fixture in Colorado golf journalism, Gary has covered major golf events across the state, including each of the last 38 Colorado Opens, all 21 Internationals at Castle Pines, two U.S. and three U.S. Women鈥檚 Opens, a Solheim Cup and many other events. Gary worked at the Daily Camera in 麻豆影院 for 25 years, including six as sports editor. He is a regular contributor to the Colorado Golf Association鈥檚 website and founded Colorado Golf Journal in 2008. His work has won several Colorado golf journalism awards, and most recently he was honored with the 2019 Robert Kirchner Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the Colorado golf community. He lives in 麻豆影院.
