Michele Ritter (Anth) received the Alumni Recognition Award at the CU 麻豆影院 Alumni Association鈥檚 87th Annual Awards Ceremony in October. Michele鈥檚 philanthropic and humanitarian causes include CU鈥檚 College of Music, the Italian department, developmentally disabled adults and the 鈥淟ost Girls鈥 of South Sudan. She lives in 麻豆影院 with her husband,聽Mike Ritter聽(颁丑别尘鈥81).

Former Colorado lawmaker Alice Donnelly Madden (Psych; Law鈥89) was named executive director of the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment at Colorado Law School. She served in the state House of Representatives for eight years and was majority leader from 2004 to 2008. She also has held positions in the governor鈥檚 office and in the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Oklahoma聽Department of聽Rehabilitation Services聽named Christine Boone聽(Hist) superintendent of聽the Oklahoma School for聽the Blind. Christine has聽spent 33 years serving聽blind youth and adults聽in six states. She also聽has been employed as a聽civil rights attorney and an聽instructor for white cane聽and independent living,聽teaching skills that help聽facilitate independence聽for those who are blind or聽have low vision abilities.

Taos, N.M., High School聽coach Bruce Gomez (PE)聽was inducted into the聽New Mexico High School聽Track and Cross Country聽Coaches Association Hall聽of Fame in January.聽Under聽his leadership, his teams聽have won 11 New Mexico聽State Team trophies.聽His teams also have聽won 12 district titles and聽have finished top five or聽better 26 times out of 31.聽Bruce, a Native American,聽was a walk-on with the聽CU cross-country and聽track teams and trained聽with Olympic champion聽Frank Shorter, a long-time 麻豆影院 resident聽and co-founder of the聽Bolder 麻豆影院. Bruce聽lives in Taos with wife聽Anne-Marie Emanuelli and聽daughter Marielle.

Brian Vogt (Class), the聽CEO of Denver Botanic聽Gardens, was honored聽with the national Award of聽Excellence from National聽Garden Clubs Inc., one聽of the nation鈥檚 most聽recognized nonprofits聽and largest volunteer聽gardening organization聽in the world. A Colorado聽native, Brian has served聽at the Botanic Gardens for聽eight years and oversaw聽the garden鈥檚 historic $73聽million capital campaign聽and master development聽plan. Brian is a writer,聽speaker, artist, gardener and hiker, serving in聽community leadership and聽public service in Colorado聽for almost 25 years. He聽also served as director聽of the Colorado Office of聽Economic Development聽and International Trade聽and was a member of the聽Governor鈥檚 Economic聽Commission on Science聽and Technology and聽served as president of the聽South Metro Chamber of聽Commerce in Denver.

Charlie Ladd聽(ElEng, Fin鈥81) developed a robot spine surgery table to help surgeons improve complicated cervical and lumbar spine surgeries that require special patient positioning. He is a co-author of the patent for the table and works for Mizuho OSI. Charlie lives in the Bay Area.

The inspiration for Bobo鈥檚 Oat Bars came to founder聽Beryl Stafford聽(Hist鈥81) after her 14-year-old daughter began making delicious oat squares. Beryl says she tweaked the recipe so that it could be healthier and a great grab when on the go. Bobo鈥檚 Oat Bars are sold nationwide. The slogan reads, 鈥淏aked from the heart in 麻豆影院, Colorado.鈥

A scientist from the U.S. Department of Energy鈥檚 Pacific Northwest National Laboratory,聽Wayne Hess聽(Chem鈥81, PhD鈥88) was named a fellow of the American Physical Society. Wayne is known for research on how materials respond to light and how they can be used to perform light-driven chemical reactions or to convert light into electricity. Wayne regularly mentors postdoctoral fellows and college students and has authored or co-authored more than 90 journal articles. He lives in Richland, Wash.

Kelley鈥檚 (Hist鈥81, MAnth鈥95) book聽Accidental Immigrants and the Search for Home: Women, Cultural Identity, and Community,聽she profiles four women who moved to new countries for marriage, an education or a career, challenging immigrant stereotypes as their lives are transformed. Her book was published in March. Carol is an anthropologist and former lawyer who has worked as a research consultant for universities and nonprofit organizations. She lives in Dania, Fla.

Reza travels to such developing countries as Haiti and China and has published articles in the聽Review of Economics and Statistics聽on his research on international trade, finance, environmental economics and economic development. In April Reza spoke at CU鈥檚 65th Conference on World Affairs. He lives in Williston, Vt.

Former CU golfer聽Steve Jones聽(A&S鈥81) received recognition as part of the 2012 Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Class at the ceremony in November. Steve was a second-team All-American as a senior in 1980-81 when he set school records that still stand, had nine top 10 finishes and 10 top 20 efforts. In 1996 Steve won the U.S. Open. He resides in Mesa, Ariz.

Thurber House, the national literary center, named聽Rick Reilly聽(Jour鈥81) a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Rick has been voted National Sportswriter of the Year 11 times. Formerly a senior writer for聽Sports Illustrated, he is a front-page columnist for ESPN.com and author of聽The New York Times聽产别蝉迟蝉别濒濒别谤听Who鈥檚 Your Caddy?(CreateSpace). He lives in Denver and Hermosa Beach, Calif., with his wife.

His primary function is to coordinate Toyota鈥檚 various research, development and marketing activities related to alternative-fuel vehicles and emerging technologies. He lives in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

His company is implementing a new glass wall product Franz invented, the VS-1 system. As CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 vice chancellor for diversity, equity and community involvement,聽Robert 鈥淏ob鈥 Boswell聽(PhDMCDBio鈥81) oversees the campus鈥 diversity recruitment and retention of students and faculty, campus climate issues and develops practices to promote diversity within the university. A 麻豆影院 resident, Bob has been a molecular, cellular and developmental biology professor at CU since 1991 and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.
