Liberty, Freedom, Democracy: The Fight for Ideas听
These three words鈥攍iberty, freedom, democracy鈥攁re words associated with the United States, the belief that the US in the guise of 鈥淎merican Dream鈥 imagery and mythology promises to all who come to its shores. In the last decade these words, and all they convey and connote, have also been wielded for political purposes, weaponized rhetorically to suggest that certain people and ideologies are more worthy of being American than others. That certain people belong in the US and are entitled to liberty, freedom, democracy鈥攁nd everyone else is excluded from these terms and their concepts.
What does 鈥渓iberty鈥 in the context of US civil rights means, particularly given the erosion of rights that the Supreme Court has been handing down in the last few years? And is it 鈥渇reedom鈥 to be who you want to be or 鈥渇reedom鈥 from various oppressions鈥攁nd who decides what is considered 鈥渙ppression鈥 vs what is 鈥渇reedom鈥? And in a time when democracy, globally, seems under threat鈥攚here for the first time in its history the United States was in danger of a peaceful transition of power on January 6, 2021鈥攖he question of what makes a nation a 鈥渄emocracy鈥 and who 鈥渄emocracy鈥 is for, are among the considerations that the CHA wishes to take up through this theme.
