Project Description

Volumetric Additive Manufacturing (VAM) is the latest and greatest 3D printing technology that is bringing science fiction 3D printing to life! By projecting images into a volume of liquid material at different angles, an accumulation of energy builds within the material. When the energy accumulation in a region of the material crosses an energy threshold, the liquid turns to a solid. So, instead of layer-by-layer or point-by-point printing as seen in traditional 3D printing methods, VAM prints an entire part at once. This allows fast printing of smooth objects, enabling possibilities for 3D printed parts that other traditional 3D printing methods do not offer. For this DLA project, the student will help model, manufacture, and build better VAM printer mechanics to enable even more possibilities with VAM.

Volumetric Additive Manufacturing

Special Requirement

We require that the student has experience with CAD software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc. We prefer that the student can perform stress analysis on the designed mechanics.
