A University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ chemical engineering team has developed new techniques and materials that show promise for faster healing of severe bone fractures and the regeneration of cartilage in ailing joints.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ student Sarah Henderson has received a $19,900 National Security Education Program fellowship to study in Russia. Henderson, a political science doctoral candidate from Spartanburg, S.C., will study Russia's developing women's movement and the role the West plays in shaping such movements.

University of Colorado President John Buechner and Chancellor Richard L. Byyny today announced receipt of a $962,000 grant awarded for the W.M. Keck Optical Measurement Laboratory to be located in JILA, a research and teaching institute on the Â鶹ӰԺ campus. Funding is from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles, one of the nation's largest philanthropic organizations. Established in 1954 by the late William Myron Keck, founder of the Superior Oil Company, the Foundation's grantmaking is focused primarily on breakthrough research in science, engineering and medicine.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ researchers are participating in a major international field experiment to understand climate change trends in the Arctic and whether the Arctic Ocean ice pack is thinning as fast as climate models are predicting.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's Science Discovery Program, now in its 10th year, will once again provide a number quality education programs for K-12 students from around Colorado. Following are some highlights of programs offered this summer: o Girls on the Wild Side: Outdoor Adventures and Explorations in Science, July 20-24, offers girls the chance to actively participate and excel in natural science, outdoor exploration and adventure. Campers will have the chance to rock climb and raft while learning local geology and river ecology.

An estimated 1,030 students will receive diplomas Aug. 8 from the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ in outdoor commencement exercises. Of the diplomas presented, approximately 674 will be bachelor's degrees, 233 will be master's degrees and 123 will be doctoral degrees. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. with a procession of graduates, faculty and administrators led by Dean of Libraries James Williams as commencement marshal.

William B. Stanley, professor and chair of the department of educational development at the University of Delaware in Newark, has been named dean of education at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. The appointment, to be effective Sept. 1, will be considered by the CU Board of Regents at its Aug. 6 meeting in Â鶹ӰԺ.

Building the skills of tomorrow's business leaders is the focus of the Andersen Consulting Leadership Seminar, taking place at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, July 15-19. During the seminar, 26 minority graduate students from 12 universities will enhance their critical thinking, leadership, teamwork and networking skills.

The McNair Scholars Program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ is accepting fall applications through Aug. 15. Designed to help students underrepresented in graduate education to attain doctoral degrees, the program is named for Ronald McNair, an African-American astronaut killed in the 1986 Challenger explosion.

Delores Etter, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has been appointed U.S. deputy undersecretary of defense for science and technology by President Clinton. Etter will manage the budget of the Department of Defense Science and Technology Program and serve as the U.S. representative to the NATO Research and Technology Board. Her responsibilities will include developing technologies for the U.S. military and oversight of all federally funded Research and Development Centers.
