Wardenburg Health Center at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ has opened its first optometry clinic to provide students with specialty eye-care services. "We feel it's going to be extremely popular because optometry is a service in high demand," said Barbara Brandt, a nurse at Wardenburg Health Center. Services offered at the Wardenburg optometry clinic will include comprehensive eye exams for all ages, contact lens fitting, treatment of glaucoma, ocular trauma and eye infections, and consultation for laser refractive surgery.

The public is invited to a western showdown between humans and prairie dogs for open land. Susan Jones, veterinarian and assistant professor of history at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, will discuss the evolution of perceptions about the prairie dog in a Sept. 3 lecture sponsored by the Center of the American West titled "Prairie Dogs -- Pets of Pests? The Historical Fortunes of a Native Western Species." The event, free and open to the public, will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room 235 of the University Memorial Center.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ is ranked 25th among the nationÂ’s top public four-year institutions in U.S. News and World ReportÂ’s 1999 Best Colleges issue. The nationÂ’s top public universities in the U.S. News ranking were the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Virginia. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked third and the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor tied for fourth.

Excited students and eager parents traveling to CU-Â鶹ӰԺ in packed cars for freshman move-in days will be greeted by CU faculty and staff on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19. The new freshman class will move into residence halls on Aug. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon and Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Informational tents will be set up to answer questions and provide directions in Farrand Field, Kittredge Commons and Darley Commons. An informational table also will be set up in Sewall Hall.

Several students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ have received scholarships from the Max Kade Foundation to study abroad in Germany. The Max Kade Foundation, a German foundation interested in higher education and international exchange, awards travel scholarships to students participating in CU-Â鶹ӰԺ exchange programs to Germany. Following are the names of each scholarship recipient, their hometown, award amount, location and duration of study and academic major:

Fourteen students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ have been awarded diversity scholarships to study in other countries in 1998-99. Two diversity scholarships, one awarded by CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and the other by the Colorado Commission of Higher Education (CCHE), help cover expenses in the Study Abroad program for Colorado residents who are underrepresented on the Â鶹ӰԺ campus because they are ethnic minorities or from the state's rural areas.
