Citing his strong leadership ability and dedication to the university, CU-Â鶹ӰԺ College of Business Dean Steven Manaster has named Professor Donald Lichtenstein associate dean of academic programs. "Donnie brings strong management skills and great commitment to this position," Manaster said. "He is well respected at the College of Business and throughout the university." LichtensteinÂ’s appointment runs through June 30, 2002. He will oversee the daily operation of the undergraduate and graduate business programs and also will spearhead faculty issues.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has received $830,000 to launch a national summer school for talented graduate students pursuing advanced studies in condensed matter and materials physics. The institute will attract about 15 of the world's top scientists to teach about 50 of the best graduate students in the United States each year, said physics Professor Leo Radzihovsky, a co-founder of the new school. The institute is patterned after a similar summer school held in Â鶹ӰԺ since 1989 for top graduate students in high-energy physics.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will participate in the "Leadership Growing Beyond 2000: LGBT Colorado Statewide Leadership Conference," Feb. 4-6 at Colorado State University. The conference is a collaborative effort by GLBT resource centers from universities in Colorado and Wyoming to bring student leaders together. Organizers said the conference is an opportunity for students to learn and grow as activists and to create regional networks with other GLBT students and advocates.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ is presenting hands-on science workshops focusing on EarthÂ’s ozone and Antarctica for fifth- through eighth-grade teachers and students from Colorado Springs, Â鶹ӰԺ, Denver, Pueblo and other Front Range cities. The workshops are put on by Science Explorers, a CU science enrichment program that offers teachers day-long, activity-based workshops to experience new science curriculum in action before they use it themselves.

Students, staff and faculty at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ are invited to attend the 12th annual Diversity Awareness Seminar, sponsored by the Multicultural Development Team. The seminar offers an experiential educational opportunity to examine diversity and multiculturalism. Sessions will be held Mondays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Memorial Center, room 305, on Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 6 and March 13.

Differences in the way animals move and the forms of their movement will be among the topics explored in the Jan. 29 CU Wizards show "Biology of Muscles in Motion." University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ biology Professors Todd Gleeson and Mark Osadjan will use people and animals to show how muscles work in the show, which begins at 9:30 a.m. in CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's Duane Physics building, room G1B30.

Three faculty members at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ were named Distinguished Professors Thursday, Jan. 20, by the CU Board of Regents.

Career Services and the CU Heritage Center at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ are partnering with metro-area professionals to sponsor a series of presentations that will help prepare students for the work environment. The series, "Workplace Readiness Spring 2000," will meet seven times throughout the spring semester. The first session, "Distinguished Alumni Look Back at their Smartest Mistakes," will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on the Â鶹ӰԺ Campus.

The Minority Arts and Sciences Program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ is expanding to include students pursuing studies in the humanities and social sciences. Eleven students recently were selected as the first scholars in the humanities component of the program. All of them are from Colorado and are currently enrolled as freshmen or sophomores at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ. Until now the MASP program has enrolled only students majoring in the sciences and mathematics.
