Astronomer John Stocke To Explore Navajo Skies At Fiske Planetarium

Navajo star and constellation myths, including the Navajo story of how the stars were created, will be the subject of the next live astronomy presentation or “star talk” at Fiske Planetarium on the campus of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. “Navajo Skies” will be presented by CU astronomer John Stocke at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 6, and repeated at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 11.

CU Celebrates International Women's Week

The International WomenÂ’s Alliance at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ is hosting three workshops a day, March 3 through March 6, during International WomenÂ’s Week, which began Sunday with a keynote speech by Winona LaDuke, an internationally acclaimed Native American and environmental activist. The workshops are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conference rooms 158 and 159, located in the University Memorial Center.

David And Frances Hawkins Receive Gamow Lecture Award At CU-Â鶹ӰԺ

Longtime Â鶹ӰԺ residents David and Frances Hawkins have been named the second recipients of the George Gamow Memorial Lecture Award at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. The award honors the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ scientists who have "made the most significant contribution to the public's understanding of science." The Hawkins received the award at the 33rd George Gamow Memorial Lecture on March 3.

Angela Davis To Speak At CU-Â鶹ӰԺ March 15

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Diversity Summit To Be Held All Day March 13

An update on the state of affirmative action and some implications for the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be presented March 13 at the third annual ChancellorÂ’s Diversity Summit, "Beyond the Choir." CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Lecture To Focus On Colorado's Legacy As Tuberculosis Treatment Center

From the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs to National Jewish hospital in Denver, several Colorado institutions can trace their history back to the early treatment of tuberculosis. Dr. Charles Scoggin, a former University of Colorado professor and founder of the Â鶹ӰԺ pharmaceutical company Somatogen, will discuss ColoradoÂ’s legacy as a tuberculosis treatment center in a program sponsored by CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's Center of the American West.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Business Professor To Address Central American Business Leaders

Leaders of Central America's most prominent businesses will attend a series of seminars in Costa Rica March 9 to March 13, including one on hiring presented by CU-Â鶹ӰԺ management professor Joe Rosse. A columnist for the Â鶹ӰԺ County Business Report, Rosse is senior associate for the Center for Human Function and Work, and co-author of High-Impact Hiring. He was invited to Costa Rica by INCAE, Latin America's leading business school and executive management program.

New Assistive Technology Lab Celebrates Open House At CU-Â鶹ӰԺ

The Office of Disability Services and Information Technology Services at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ has created an Assistive Technology Lab to provide computer access and special technology services to students with disabilities. The Assistive Technology Lab will hold an Open House on Thursday, March, 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the lab, located at Willard Hall in room 333. The open house will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the resources in the lab, meet staff and experiment with various adaptive devices. Refreshments will be served.

Educator To Address Standards For Teachers At CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Sewall Symposium Series

A former public schoolteacher now involved in the training of teachers in math and science will speak at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Thursday, March 12, as part of the Sewall Symposium Series. Joseph M. Frattaroli, chief operating officer for the Teachers Academy for Mathematics and Science, will discuss the national problems of unqualified teachers and school districts that aren't supporting teachers' professional development.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Overall Crime Statistics Continue Five-Year Decline

Overall crime declined at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ in 1997, although increases were shown in certain categories, according to the annual Data Report released today by the CU Police Department. The overall decline continues a multi-year trend of decreasing criminal activity, said Jim Fadenrecht, director of Public Safety. In 1997, there were 2,819 reports of crime, compared with 2,971 in 1996 and an average of 3,002 in the years from 1994 to 1996.
