The Study Abroad Program at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships and four exchange positions to students enrolled in study abroad programs this spring. Students were awarded scholarships and exchange positions based on financial need, academic standing and the student's ability to write and be a good ambassador for the university and the United States.

A cornerstone ceremony for the new Humanities building at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be held on Friday, March 19, at 4 p.m. At the ceremony, which will be held at the building construction site on Norlin Quadrangle, the cornerstone will be set and a time capsule placed behind the cornerstone.

WHO: University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Ski & Snowboard Club members together with students from Â鶹ӰԺ’s Family Learning Center (FLC) after-school program. WHAT: Ski Club members will host the FLC students to a free morning of skiing lessons, a pizza lunch and then an afternoon of skiing and mentoring with club members. WHEN: Friday, March 19

Blatant thievery among colonies of tiny tropical ants may allow them to proposer in part because the species is more peaceful than the vast majority of its closely related relatives, according to a University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ study. The odd practice of food theft among neighboring colonies of the ant species Ectatomma ruidum is fostered by "chemical camouflage" used by larcenous ants to enter nearby nests, said CU-Â鶹ӰԺ biology Professor Michael Breed. Success also depends on the vigilance of guard ants posted at nest entrances to eject intruders.

A plan to address a pigeon problem at the University of Colorado's Family Housing Newton Court complex will get underway this week. The Family Housing Tenant Council, an elected body of representatives living in family housing, recently reviewed a list of pigeon prevention methods and approved the option of trapping and relocating the pigeons. The Tenant Council also approved a strict policy to address and hold accountable residents who may harbor, feed or attract pigeons to their balconies or patios.

Plans for updating and improving dining options are in the works at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, host of the National Association of College and University Food Services Regional Conference March 21-24 at the University Memorial Center. "Escape to Planet Â鶹ӰԺ: Experience the Difference" is the theme of the conference. Representatives from more than 20 universities are expected to attend. Areas represented include Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada.

Professor Lord Colin Renfrew of Cambridge University, considered by many experts to be the premier archaeologist in the world, will give a lecture at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ on March 20. Renfrew will present the 1999 Distinguished Archaeology lecture titled "The Origins of Linguistic Diversity -- Towards a World View." Sponsored by the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ anthropology department and funded by a department alumnus, the free public talk will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 270 of the Hale Science Building.

University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ students will have the opportunity to learn important spring break safety tips during the "Safer Spring Break Campaign" on March 15-16. Campaign events will be held at the University Memorial Center Dalton Trumbo Fountain Court and the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Recreation Center. Wardenburg Health Center is sponsoring the campaign to educate students about issues such as dating safety, travel safety, alcohol poisoning, injury prevention, skin cancer prevention and healthy sexuality.

Ten experts will participate in a virtual open forum discussion on the effects of technology in the new millennium —pro and con— on Thursday, March 18, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the CU Art Galleries, Sibell Wolle Fine Arts Building.

The Student Diversity Forum at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will host the Sixth Annual Undergraduate Student Diversity Conference on March 9-10 titled "The Evolution of Revolution: Does Society Really Change?" All events will be held in the University Memorial Center and are free and open to the public. The diversity conference is one of the only academic conferences in the country that is entirely student organized.
