The College of Business at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will host the 12th Annual Business Leadership Program from June 13 to 19, designed to expose high school juniors to business and computer skills and the rigors of college life. Participants live in a CU residence hall, meet College of Business faculty and Â鶹ӰԺ-Denver area business leaders and learn college and financial aid application processes. The application deadline is April 16.

MEDIA ADVISORY University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ music professor and jazz saxophonist Willie Hill will perform as part of a jazz combo for state legislators on Wednesday, March 31, at the Colorado History Museum. The performance will incorporate a lecture about the history of jazz in America. The program is part of a series of "Smart Lunches" that the university presents for the legislature highlighting some of CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's most dynamic scholars.

An exhibition featuring the work of masters of fine arts students at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be on display at the CU Art Galleries April 2-23, in the Sibell-Wolle Fine Arts Building on campus. Paintings, sculptures, photography and interactive installations will be shown that explore relationships and diverse cultures, as well as challenge the viewer's visual and perceptual awareness. All of the artists have exhibited their work nationally or internationally.

Four of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's most distinguished professors in teaching and scholarship will give free public lectures on the frontiers of science ranging from astrophysics to anthropology during April. The campus talks are part of a new program featuring lectures by President's Teaching Scholars from CU-Â鶹ӰԺ. Hosted by CU-Â鶹ӰԺ Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and the Office of Community Relations, the Spring series is titled "Quests for Origins, Evolution and Immortality."

Appointed to the Tisone Chair in Accounting at CU's College of Business and Administration this spring, David Guenther brings years of professional experience as a CPA and an outstanding scholarly reputation to the college. Guenther, a CPA who holds a doctorate from the University of Washington, said he enjoys preparing accounting students for the real world. "You can tell the students what it's going to be like," he said. "It's helpful to have that background. No textbook can share that kind of information."

Jin Di, the translator of James Joyce's "Ulysses" into Chinese, will lecture on "Joyce in China: Tale of Two Encounters" on Wednesday, March 31, at the University of Colorado. The talk will be given in the Hellems Arts and Sciences Building, room 267, at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Professor Jin is a visiting fellow at the University of Washington and a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Virginia.

CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's Urban-Rural Divorce in the American West program, a mock divorce trial that explores the complex relationship between rural and urban interests, will be presented as a benefit for the Colorado Rural Health Center on Thursday, April 8. The program will be held in the Arvada Center beginning at 6 p.m.

Nobel laureate Thomas Cech of the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has been selected to become the next president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute by the organizationÂ’s trustees beginning in January of 2000. Cech, who has been a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator since 1988, will continue as a distinguished professor at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and professor at the CU Health Sciences Center in Denver. Cech shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Sidney Altman of Yale University for their independent discoveries that RNA can act as a catalyst in cell development.

Graduates in the class of 1999 are entering a strong job market similar to the last two years, according to Gordon Gray, University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Career Services director. "The number of employer interactions with students on campus is unprecedented, " said Gray. "Increases in job postings, resume referrals, interviews and attendance at career fairs reflect a strong market nationally and locally. "The Colorado unemployment rate has never been lower. There are many companies hiring and needing the skills of college graduates," Gray said.

The Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has been awarded the Youth Crime Watch of America's Casey Local Business/Organization Award. The award was presented at the 12th National Youth Crime Prevention Conference held in Denver March 3-6. The center was selected from hundreds of organizations, schools and community programs that have made outstanding contributions to the prevention of crime, drug use and violence throughout the United States.
