The 125th anniversary of the state's oldest public institution of higher education will be celebrated April 20 with an equal number of cakes including one in the shape of Old Main, the first University of Colorado building, which was completed in April 1876. The celebration will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on CU-Â鶹ӰԺ's historic Norlin Quadrangle, bordered by eight of the university's oldest buildings. An estimated 4,000 guests are expected to attend the 125th anniversary celebration. The public is invited to attend.

Historic Norlin Quadrangle at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be a sea of cakes the afternoon of April 20th as thousands of guests gather to celebrate the university's 125th anniversary. Traditions Catering of Â鶹ӰԺ has been ordering supplies, including 125 heavy-duty cake boxes, for the past two months in preparation for the celebration. Baking begins this weekend on the centerpiece cake -- a replica of Old Main in chocolate filled with raspberries and whipped cream.

Two undergraduates from the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ have been named 2001 Truman Scholars from a field of 592 candidates nominated by colleges and universities throughout the nation. CU junior Jack "Doug" Wilson, an English and philosophy double major from Colorado Springs, and Jessica Sucherman, a junior and a double major in English and anthropology from Mancos, Colo., each will receive $3,000 scholarships for their senior years at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ and $27,000 each to be used for graduate school.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ-based BioServe Space Technologies Center is sending an intriguing biomedical experiment to the International Space Station April 19 to test the effects of long-term weightlessness on antibiotic production.

The myths, astronomical phenomena and constellations of the sky in the Southern Hemisphere will be explored in a live astronomy show at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's Fiske Planetarium on Friday, April 20, and Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. Deidre Brucker, a CU-Â鶹ӰԺ senior majoring in computer science, and Sanlyn Buxner, a recent CU graduate who now works at Fiske Planetarium, will present "Southern Skies."

NASA astronaut Bonnie J. Dunbar will visit CU-Â鶹ӰԺ on Friday, April 13, to present the K.D. Wood Colloquium in the department of aerospace engineering sciences. Her presentation, titled "From Apollo Into the New Millennium: Human Space Flight Exploration," will begin at 3 p.m. in room ECCR 245 of the Engineering Center. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The University of Colorado Graduate School of Business Association is hosting the 9th annual CU MBA Diversity Benefit and Auction on Thursday, April 19, at 6 p.m. in the Coors Events/Conference Center on Regent Drive at CU-Â鶹ӰԺ. The benefit and auction is open to the public. The cost is: $50 for members of the public; $20 in advance for CU faculty, staff, alumni and their guests ($30 at the door); and $10 in advance for CU students ($15 at the door). Larger monetary donations are welcome.

The mystery of what caused a great earthquake in northeast India in 1897 that killed several thousand people and reduced all masonry buildings to rubble in a region roughly the size of England finally appears to have been solved.

A hate crimes forum will be held at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ School of Law on Monday, April 16, in conjunction with Holocaust Awareness Week. Three aspects of hate crimes will be examined at the forum in room 156 of the Fleming Law Building from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The forum will feature: * Alexander Tsesis, attorney for the city of Chicago, speaking on "The Link Between Hate Speech and Hate Crimes" * Dan Grossman, minority leader of the Colorado House of Representatives, speaking on "Legislating Hate Crimes"

Azul Casares, a co-founder of the firm Patagon, which is a pioneer in Latin American Internet-based financial services, will speak at the CU-Â鶹ӰԺ College of Business on Tuesday, April 17. Patagon was valued at $705 million when Spanish bank Banco Santander Central Hispano acquired a 75 percent stake in the company in March 2000. Casares, a former customer relations executive of Patagon, will speak at 5 p.m. in room 216 in the business building. She will discuss her experiences as an entrepreneur and provide insight about international e-commerce.
