A panel of experts will gather Aug. 29 at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ for a free public discussion of the causes and effects of wildfire and how technology could lead to better fire management. "Fires in the West: What Should We Do?" will take place in the University Memorial Center, room 235, at 7:30 p.m. Free parking will be available in the Euclid Avenue Autopark and light refreshments will follow the presentation.

The University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ has been selected by NASA to design and build an instrument package for a new satellite known as the Solar Dynamics Observatory, the first mission in the agency's new "Living with a Star" program.

The fall 2002 freshman class at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ will be larger than last year by about 370 students, the result of record applications and high confirmation rates among those admitted, university officials say.

Kevin Lee, associate director of University Communications at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ, has been named interim executive director of University Communications while a national search for the permanent position is conducted. The position was vacated in early July by the departure of Bobbi Barrow, who left the university to join Denver Health Medical Center.

Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian organization, will set up a traveling exhibit at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Aug. 24-25 to raise awareness of the need for medicines in poor countries. The exhibit, housed in a 48-foot tractor-trailer, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be set up between Fiske Planetarium and the Leeds School of Business on the north side of Regent Drive.

The Religious Campus Organizations will host its second annual ice cream social at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the lawn of the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts Building. RCO is composed of 21 member groups involved in campus ministry at the university. Staff and students will be available to answer questions and provide information on the groups.

Their journey as refugees fleeing the brutal civil war in Sudan that claimed the lives of their families and their villages has taken them through some of the most war-torn areas of the world. Now it is bringing them to the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ.

The Stampede shuttle bus will provide convenient connections between the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ's main and east campuses and Research Park beginning Aug. 26. The natural-gas-powered shuttle will operate from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, connecting the campuses with buses arriving every 10 minutes. CU-Â鶹ӰԺ students, faculty and staff will be able to board the Stampede without charge by showing their RTD-validated student bus pass or faculty-staff Eco Pass.

The University of Colorado Police Department will give away free pizza to students during "Hill Stops" on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23-24, as part of an ongoing effort to enhance relations between university students and police. The giveaway starts at 11 p.m. on Friday and 8 p.m. on Saturday and will end when the pizza runs out. Officers will give away pizza and lemonade to students who stop and visit. Students should look for CU officers on the campus side of the Hill underpass at Broadway and College Avenue. Â鶹ӰԺ Police also will participate in the Hill Stops.

A search committee has been named to identify finalists for the position of dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Â鶹ӰԺ. Stewart Hoover, professor of journalism and mass communication, is currently serving as interim dean of the school. He assumed the post last February, following the departure of former dean Del Brinkman, who resigned citing health and family concerns.
