Digital Sign Considerations

Who is the audience? What messagingÌýam I trying to communicate? As a communications channel, the objective of CU Â鶹ӰԺ Digital Signage is to better connect campus audiences to university messaging. Specifically, it aims to provide the most relevant and targeted messages at the most appropriate time, improve brand consistency and increase engagement.ÌýTo meet this goal, it’s important that the content published is engaging and appropriate for the channel. Visit theÌýBrand StandardsÌýandÌýDigital Signage Best Practices and Strategy GuideÌýfor more information.

The type of messaging and your audience will help direct your location choice.ÌýWhen deciding on a location for a display keep thisÌýin mind: the display and player computer needÌýa power outlet and a network port. If the location you plan to install the digital signage does not have a power outlet and a network port,Ìýcontact OIT. They will be able to provide an estimate for the installation cost. Also consider the room lighting and proximity to windows which may impact the display impact.

The type of display should be driven by your messaging goals. Some clarifying questions to ask are:

  • Do you need an interactive display or a static display?
  • Should your display be landscape or portrait?Ìý

Think about your contentÌýand the location of the display. If you plan to use videos then aÌýlandscape display works well. IfÌýyou want to create a digital poster feel to your display, then consider a portrait layout.

Most players can be placed behind the display depending on the location of the display and the size of the player. Some displays have an integrated player. The university does not offer hardware recommendations because it is location and messaging dependent. Each unit will need to research which signs will work best for their budget and needs.
