In specific situations, federal law may authorize the release of听FERPA-protected information without the student's authorization.

Class Recordings

If a recording includes a student in class and the student is identifiable either by voice or image, then the recording is considered a part of the student鈥檚 educational record and is protected by federal law.

Concerns for Student Behavior, Health & Safety

Federal law allows university faculty or staff to assist when听students are perceived to be behaving oddly; generate concerns about the safety of the student or others; or are in a health or safety emergency.

Disciplinary Information

Federal law allows certain individuals to be notified of a disciplinary case听and/or given access to the听student's disciplinary information under specific circumstances.

Student Recommendations

Federal law limits the type of information听you're allowed to disclose in a听student recommendation based on the nature of the recipient and whether the student has provided听written consent.
