Laboratory
The Ecological Fluid Dynamics Laboratory specializes in the use of laser-based instrumentation to quantify and understand fluid flow processes associated with ecological processes in water and air.Ìý We have a particular interest in understanding how complex flows transport and mix biologically relevant entities.
Benthic Turbulence Flume
The laboratory houses a number of fluid flow facilities.Ìý The Benthic Turbulence Flume is the largest, at 15 m in length and holding 25,000 liters of water.
Ìý
Plankton Turbulence Facility
The Plankton Turbulence Facility is the smallest flow facility in the laboratory, designed to study plankton swimming and aggregation in 1-liter samples of plankton.
Ìý
We use continuous-wave and pulsed lasers across a range of wavelengths to measure instantaneous flow velocities (using particle image velocimetry) and scalar structure (using laser-induced fluorescence).
