AREN 2050: Building Systems and Materials (Fall)
This undergraduate course investigates the broad subject of building materials, building assembly details, systems, and methods of building construction. Students will explore codes and classifications, foundations, wood, steel, concrete, masonry, cladding, doors and windows, interiors, finishes, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety and conveyance systems. Upon completion of the course students will have a foundational understanding of building systems and the process required to design and construct a building.
Course Learning Objectives
- Identify the numerous building components, materials, and systems;
- Understand the sequence and relationship between building assemblies; and
- Develop industry vocabulary.
CVEN 5836: Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Capital Projects (Spring)
This graduate course focuses on building information modeling (BIM) for buildings-type projects. Students will gain knowledge on the implementation of BIM throughout a building鈥檚 lifecycle, from planning and design through construction and operations. This project-based course covers topics including setting up projects for success, model-based cost estimating, scheduling and 4D simulation, and design coordination.
Course Learning Objectives
The goal of the course is to give students an overall understanding of building information modeling (BIM) concepts throughout a building鈥檚 lifecycle. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Define BIM;
- Describe BIM uses throughout a building鈥檚 lifecycle;
- Perform model-based cost estimating;
- Perform 4D simulation;
- Perform BIM-based design coordination;
- Evaluate and communicate your ideas related to implementing BIM throughout a building鈥檚 lifecycle.
Modules
- Introduction to BIM and Setting Up Projects for Success
- Model-based Cost Estimating
- Scheduling and 4D Simulation
- Design Coordination and Clash Detection
- Special Topics in BIM (e.g., Virtual Reality, BIM for Sustainability, Field Technologies)
