Jeannie Doepper Thompson* (Zool鈥64) 补苍诲听Jack Thompson* (Hist鈥64, MA鈥70) built $1.6 million in combined gifts to trigger a new $2 million jazz studies program endowment in March. To recognize and honor them the program will be renamed the Thompson Jazz Studies Program. The couple serves as 麻豆影院 campus chairs of the CU Creating Futures fundraising campaign. Jeannie also serves on the College of Music Advisory Board and as an ex-officio member of the Alumni Association board, offering insight and guidance. The couple lives in 麻豆影院.

A lawyer in Steamboat Springs, Colo.,听John Grassby听(Phil, PolSci鈥64) has a focus on corporate and international law. John taught U.S.-Mexico relations at CU Denver in the 鈥90s and wrote many columns on related subjects. His first novel,听Calcutta Sunrise听(Nebbadoon Press), was published in June and was submitted to the Annual Awards Program of the 鈥淐olorado Humanities Center for the Book.鈥 The novel follows a freighter during India鈥檚 independence from England in 1947 and partition into India and Pakistan.

颁辞耻辫濒别听Arlan Gadeken听(EngrPhys鈥64) 补苍诲听Mary Stevens Gadeken听(Edu鈥64) returned from a two-week Rotaplast Mission to Karikal, India. Rotaplast is a Rotary International organization with the goal of 鈥渟aving smiles and changing lives.鈥 They were among eight volunteers who assisted 15 medical personnel in performing 67 free听cleft palate, lip revision and burn release surgeries. Arlan sterilized instruments while Mary assisted the post-anesthesia care nurses working with patients and parents. The Gadekens are retired and live in Kennewick, Wash.

The Predator Ridge exhibit at the Denver Zoo was dedicated to CU President听Bruce Benson* (Geol鈥64, HonDocSci鈥04) in May. He chaired the zoo鈥檚 board during three of its most active years, which included a capital campaign to build more exhibits. The ceremony was attended by about 200 guests, including his wife, three children and 10 grandchildren. The $27 million exhibit is called Bruce D. Benson Predator Ridge.

For the past 20 years 麻豆影院 resident听Dave Carlson听(PolSci鈥64, MA鈥69) has been a staff member of the 麻豆影院 County food bank, Community Food Share, where he is in charge of its various garden projects and fruit orchards. A consulting arborist, he has his own company, Carlson Tree. Dave writes he looks forward to a trek to Nepal in the spring with Friends of Nepal, a returned Peace Corps volunteer group.

The nonprofit Home Builders Institute appointed听John Courson* (Fin鈥64) president and chief executive officer. He formerly served as president and CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association, was chairman of the California Housing Finance Agency under former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from 2004-08 and participated in international housing initiatives led by the White House and the U.S. Treasury Department.

It emphasizes the tactical operations on the front lines while examining U.S. and United Nations strategy and the operations of the Communist Chinese and North Korean forces. John lives in Annandale, Va.

The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver honored听Lynne Vincent Cheney听(MEngl鈥64), wife of former vice president Dick Cheney, as the 2012 Citizen of the West. She was recognized at the stock show鈥檚 signature dinner on Jan. 9. Lynne is the author of听Blue Skies, No Fences听(Threshold Editions), which is about growing up in the West. She lives in McLean, Va.

John Quicker鈥檚听(Anth鈥65;听PhDSoc鈥70) book,听, was published听by Temple University听Press. Kirkus Reviews听wrote that it is 鈥渁听compelling sociological听examination of the pre-1970 Los Angeles 鈥榮treet听groups鈥 that improbably听spawned the Crips 补苍诲听Bloods,鈥 and is a 鈥済ripping urban history.鈥 John听is a professor emeritus听of sociology at California听State University,听Dominguez Hills.

For more than听45 years, Douglas Kimmel听(Psych)听has been a champion for the LGBTQ community. He received a lifetime achievement award from political advocacy non-profit EqualityMaine for his distinguished service as a psychologist working with the LGBTQ community. Doug lives with his husband in Hancock, Maine, where they were legally married in 2013, on their 44th anniversary. In 1969, the couple had听a wedding ceremony in 麻豆影院 at the United Protestant Center.听

Nancy Smoyer (Hist) wrote Donut Dollies in Vietnam: Baby-Blue Dresses & OD Green, a memoir about her year in Southeast Asia as a Red Cross recreation worker in 1967-68, and the aftermath. She used letters and tapes sent home during her tour as well as emails written to veteran groups since 1993 to recall her memories. She has worked with veterans in various capacities, including as a Vet Center counselor, volunteer at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and organizer of the Stand Down in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Artist, author and self-publisher Carol L. Young (A&S) published What Grows Here? Mountain Gardening听in Northern California, which has sold more than 9,000 copies since appearing in 1986. Carol remembers her time at CU fondly. She says that when she first boarded a plane from California to attend CU, she stood up and asked, 鈥淚s there anyone here who is in the hiking club?鈥 Three people stood up, and she remembers becoming an active member of CU鈥檚 hiking club after that. She lives in Winchester, Ore.

Columbia University appointed听Tom Maniatis听(A&S; MA鈥67) director of its precision medicine initiative. He also serves as chair of the biochemistry and molecular biophysics department and on the board of directors for the New York Genome Center, which he co-founded. The center looks for clinical solutions to diseases based on genomic research. Tom lives in New York.

History Colorado awarded听Clementine Washington Pigford听(Spch) the Honorable Mention Miles Bancroft award for her 600-page book,听Colorado African American Organizations 1899-1926: Before and after the Dance. It was her second award from the organization since 2012. The book contains information about clubs and events sponsored by various African American organizations for the betterment of their academic, civic, religious and social groups. Clementine lives in Centennial, Colo.
