Avery Bang听(MCivEngr鈥�09), CEO of Bridges to Prosperity, received an honorary doctorate of science degree from Clarkson University this spring. The award recognizes her commitment to engineering that benefits humanity. Since joining Bridges to Prosperity as a volunteer in 2006, Avery has worked to ensure safe, year-round access to markets and health clinics in rural developing communities. She was the featured speaker at this fall鈥檚 Back to 麻豆影院 Homecoming Weekend luncheon in the CU Rec Center and also received the Alumni Association鈥檚 Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Graduate Award.

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation selected听Jennifer Kling听(MPhil鈥�09) as one of 22 Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellows. The fellowship is the nation鈥檚 largest award for PhD candidates in the humanities and social sciences addressing questions of ethical and religious values. Jennifer is working on a doctorate in philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her dissertation project is titled 鈥淭he State Right of Self-Defense: A Claim in Need of Justification.鈥�

The statistics on sex trafficking are shocking, yet many remain unaware the phenomenon exists.听Maya Lea Osterman听(Thtr鈥�09) is trying to change this. She is performing a one-woman show, 鈥淔or Sale,鈥� to increase awareness on the subject in theaters, schools and conferences across the country. The fictitious characters are based on several years of Maya鈥檚 research.

Colleen Ryan (Fin鈥�78) completes the trio as the franchise鈥檚 regional owner for its Orange County locations.听BRONZED听offers a 10-percent discount to all CU alumni.

The Chicago-based national commercial real estate firm American Street Capital hired听Alexander F. Rek听(Econ鈥�09) as assistant vice president in January. Alexander came to American Street Capital from his job as director of marketing at the residential mortgage bank Chicago Financial Services. He is a licensed real estate broker in Illinois and lives in Chicago.

Zehnder Communications hired听Shoni Davidson听(Jour鈥�09) as its digital producer. She manages interactive projects for such national clients as Sazerac Co. and Farmers Insurance. Shoni formerly worked as senior interactive producer for the Los Angeles firm 72andSunny. She lives in Playa Vista, Calif.听

Former U.S. pro-cyclist听Tyler Hamilton听(A&S ex鈥�09) rode for the U.S. Postal Service team and wrote听The Secret Race: Inside the Hidden World of the Tour de France. He runs the Tyler Hamilton Training program where he works with others as their personal cycling coach. He divides his time between 麻豆影院 and Missoula, Mont.

Two years ago听Jeffrey Land听(Hist鈥�09) and a few friends started South Mouth Wings in 麻豆影院 on Broadway and Arapahoe. Jeffrey is in his third year of law school at Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Fla.

USA Track & Field named听Jenny Barringer Simpson听(PolSci鈥�09) Athlete of the Week on July 24. That week Jenny won the 1500-meter race in 4:00.48 at the Monaco Herculis Diamond League. In August, Jenny placed second in the women鈥檚 1,500 at the world championships in Moscow.

Four years ago听Kirk Williams听(Soc鈥�09) flew over the handlebars of his mountain bike at Hall Ranch near Lyons, Colo., and damaged three vertebrae and his spinal cord. Last summer he attended the No Barriers Summit in Telluride. The summit has clinics and workshops for adaptive rock climbing, paddle sports, yoga, hiking cycling and more. Kirk lives in 麻豆影院 and plans to launch his business Bird Eye Optics, which uses a flying camera to film and photograph different events. He directs the flying camera from his wheelchair.

Colorado native听Natalie Wood听(Comm鈥�09) produces and anchors 10/11 Central Nebraska News at 5:30 and 9 p.m. on KSNB. Natalie landed her first anchor job in Williston, N.D., with an NBC affiliate. She enjoys running, biking and spending time with her dog.

NBA player听Chris Copeland听(Psych鈥�09) reached a career-high of 33 points playing for the Knicks against the Atlanta Hawks in April. He then started in his first NBA playoff game against the Boston Celtics in Madison Square Garden. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 every basketball player鈥檚 dream to play here,鈥� Chris told听CUBuffs.com.听鈥淚t鈥檚 the Garden; it鈥檚 the Mecca of basketball. It is such a blessing to be here.鈥� Chris played for the Buffs from 2002-06 and is No. 34 on the all-time Colorado scoring list.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awarded听Ian Soroka听(Film, Phil鈥�09) a scholarship to Slovenia in film studies. He is one of more than 1,700 U.S. citizens to travel abroad with a student Fulbright for the 2012-13 academic year. Ian鈥檚 research focuses on Slovene/Yugoslav film history and his project is titledCinema and Memory: Cultural Preservation through National Cinema Slovenia.

Former Alumni Association student worker听David Brennan听(Int Af, Hist鈥�09) has been living and working in Brussels, Belgium, since graduating from CU-麻豆影院. In August David was happy to write he saw the CU men鈥檚 basketball team during their European tour.
