She is an award-winning Southwestern author, journalist and photographer living in Raton, N.M.

Colorado Women听(University Press of Colorado) written by听Gail Beaton听(Edu鈥76, MHist鈥02) is the first full-length chronicle of the lives, roles and contributions of women in Colorado from prehistory through the modern day. Gail has taught for more than 26 years in Colorado public schools and resides in Denver.

麻豆影院 photographer听James Balog鈥檚(MGeog鈥77) photo of Birthday Canyon in Greenland appeared in听The Denver Post听in November.听James is the protagonist in the documentary听Chasing Ice听directed by Jeff Orlowski, a film that follows James bearing witness to rapidly changing glaciers. The documentary premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and received the best cinematography award. James鈥 photo also was on pages 66-67 of the December 2012听Coloradan.

麻豆影院 resident听Joan Knapp听(PhDEngl鈥77) appeared in the article 鈥淧ushing Back on Parkinson鈥檚鈥 in the Nov. 13, 2012, issue of听The Denver Post. Joan was diagnosed with Parkinson鈥檚 disease about two years ago when she had trouble walking unassisted and getting up from a chair. After joining the Parkinson鈥檚 Boot Camp exercise class at the 麻豆影院 YMCA last March, Joan has improved. 鈥淲hen I came here, I was teetering all over the place. I function like a normal person now. I can do so much more than I ever thought I could,鈥 Joan told听The Post.

Close to听William Baltz Jr.鈥檚 (Hist鈥78) lake house in Three Rivers, Mich., are five spiritual centers. Bill is writing a story on the area. The centers are St. Gregory鈥檚 Abbey (an Episcopal monastery), GilChrist (an ecumenical spiritual retreat), The Hermitage (an ecumenical spiritual retreat), Earthsong Peace Chamber (a place for spiritual ceremonies) and Apple听Farm (a nonprofit charitable corporation). William writes, 鈥淭he fact that all these entities, which attract guests and pilgrims from all over the world, are within walking distance of each other and tucked away in a rural area is truly remarkable.鈥

While at CU听Jay Poirier听(EPOBio鈥78) began working for several asphalt-related groups where one of his jobs included analyzing asphalt for the U.S. government. After selling his motorcycle to buy tools, Jay founded Perfect Patch Asphalt Co. in 1979. It is one of the oldest companies still run by its founders in Colorado and serves customers throughout the Front Range. Jay lives in Denver.

In September 2011,听Larry Ward听(Fin鈥78) retired as president and CEO of Heritage Oaks Bank in Paso Robles, Calif. Heritage Oaks Bank grew to become a $1 billion community bank serving the central coast of California under his leadership. Larry lives in Templeton, Calif., and will continue to serve the bank as a member of its board of directors.

Denver Foothills Gold Club director听Tom Woodard听(Mktg鈥78) was elected to the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. Tom was a renowned junior and young adult player in Denver, co-founded the First Tee of Denver and serves as head professional at Foothills. Tom was the first African-American golfer at CU where he received honorable mention All-American and was inducted into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in 2012.

Former CU cross country and track听star听Mary Decker Slaney听(A&S ex鈥79) was part of the 2012 Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Class and received recognition at the ceremony in November. She was the first star in any women鈥檚 varsity sport at Colorado, set numerous CU records and was a six-time All-American before turning professional following her sophomore year.听 In 1982 she set six world records and, during her career, set world records in 10 different events.听 A two-time Olympian, she won the coveted Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States in 1982. Mary lives in Eugene, Ore.

麻豆影院 resident听Richard Wobbekind* (MEcon鈥79, PhD鈥84) is executive director of CU-麻豆影院鈥檚 Business Research Division and senior associate dean for academic programs. He has been on the faculty at Leeds School of Business since 1985 and associate dean since 2000. Richard teaches MBA students in macroeconomics, public policy, entrepreneurship and managerial economics and has received three awards for teaching excellence.

Former CU golfer听Steve Jones听(A&S鈥81) received recognition as part of the 2012 Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Class at the ceremony in November. Steve was a second-team All-American as a senior in 1980-81 when he set school records that still stand, had nine top 10 finishes and 10 top 20 efforts. In 1996 Steve won the U.S. Open. He resides in Mesa, Ariz.
