2024 Annual Meeting of the North American Conference on British StudiesÌý

Description: The Center for British and Irish Studies of CU Â鶹ӰԺ (CBIS) is pleased to announce the launch of a small grant program designed to encourage graduate student participation at the 2024 meeting of the North American Conference on British Studies, which will be held in Denver, Colorado on November 15-17, 2024. For more information on the NACBS conference, including the Call for Papers, see . (Note: the NACBS proposal deadline was April 26, 2024.)
Eligibility: This small grant will be open to students who will be enrolled in a CU Â鶹ӰԺ graduate program in Fall 2024 and who will have a paper, poster, or panel proposal included in the final conference program.
Process: Grants will be awarded after the conference has taken place. Each grant will be in the amount of $230. This amount covers the graduate student registration rate ($50), the required NACBS student membership fee ($30), and a flat amount of $150 for meals and incidentals.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Applicants must provide the following to cbis@colorado.edu after the conference has taken place and no later than December 2, 2024, at 5 pm.
Each application must include the following documents, combined into ONE pdf:
- The Application Form below
- Proof of acceptance and participation, which must include the following four documents:
- A copy of the acceptance notice from the conference organizers
- Proof of payment of the graduate student registration fee ($50)
- Proof of payment of the NACBS membership fee ($30 – online only)
- A copy of the section(s) of the final conference program that includes the applicant’s name and the title(s) of their presentation(s)/panel(s).

The Center for British and Irish Studies is proud to offer theÌýOgilvy Travel Fellowships andÌýConference Travel GrantsÌýto graduate students affiliated with any CU Â鶹ӰԺ department or college.
J. D. A. Ogilvy Travel Fellowships support graduate research in any aspect of British and/or Irish Studies that necessitates traveling to libraries, archives, or locales anywhere in the world.
Examples might include, in no particular order:
1) travel to Oxford, England, and the archives of the Bodleian Libraries to study ephemera related to the women’s suffrage movement in the UK for the creation and staging of a play set in 1918;
2) travel to Kingston and other locations in Jamaica to conduct archival, art historical, and topographical research for a scholarly, multimedia project on the First Maroon War; and
3) travel to Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, London, and Brussels to interview key players and consult the historical archives of the European Commission for a dissertation on Brexit negotiations.
Conference Travel Grants are available to graduate students who have presented or will present papers addressing subjects dealing with British and/or Irish Studies at a conference, in the United States or abroad, during the current academic year or the first semester of the next academic year. In addition, graduate students who are presenting a paper in a virtual/online conference may also apply to have their registration fee reimbursed. Note that awards are subject to all CU regulations regarding domestic and international travel. Award recipients will receive the necessary information when they are notified of the success of their application.

Ogilvy Travel Fellowships
Eligibility
J. D. A. Ogilvy Travel Fellowships support travel for graduate research in any aspect of British and/or Irish Studies anywhere in the world. Graduate students working in any CU Â鶹ӰԺ department or college may apply. Preference will be given to students who are working on a Ph.D. dissertation, but other students are strongly encouraged to apply as well.ÌýPrevious winners of an Ogilvy Fellowship may applyÌýbut must justify the need for additional support beyond the initial funding. They must also have submitted their Fellowship Activity Report(s) on any previous CBIS grant or fellowship within the required time frame.ÌýStudents who were awarded a grant prior to 2020 that had to be canceled because of Covid-related travel restrictions or for any other reason, need to reapply.
- The proposed travel must be completed before the formal granting of the graduate degree and must be for academic research purposes only.Ìý
- The proposed travel must take place sometime between the beginning of summer 2025Ìýand the end of summer 2026Ìýand may be of any length.Ìý
- A fellowshipÌýmay fund up toÌý$7,500. Most awards are smaller. Partial grants may be awarded at the discretion of the awarding committee.
- This fellowshipÌýmay not be used to cover conference-related costs.Ìý
- This fellowship may only be used to cover research costs. It may not be used to cover production or other costs.
Application Materials
The awarding committee will only consider complete applications. Each application must include the following:
- Confidential Letter of Recommendation- Request a confidential letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor familiar with your work, sent by that faculty member via email attachment toÌýcbis@colorado.eduÌýby the due date. Letters should comment on the merits of the proposal and the abilities and potential of the applicant.
- OneÌýemail toÌýcbis@colorado.eduÌýwith the following items attached. (Please include your name in the titles of all attached documents.)
- A single document (.doc, .docx, or .pdf) with the following:
- Application Form
- A project description that demonstrates why your project falls under the heading of British and/or Irish Studies and includes a careful explanation and justification of why travel is necessary. Identify what resourcesÌýyou need to access that are not available online or through the CU Libraries, including Interlibrary Loan. In the case of archival work, for instance, identify as precisely as possible what materials you wish to consult in the institution(s) you are planning to visit.
Your project description must be no longer than 1000 words, double-spaced, with standard margins, in 11-point or 12-point standard font (such as Times New Roman). - A detailed schedule that lists the places you plan to visit and the expected beginning and end dates of each stop along with its specific purpose.
- AÌýcomplete andÌýdetailed budget that follows the budget guidelines listed in this document. (If you plan to stay in London, please be sure to apply for the Hazel Barnes FlatÌýASAP.)
- Your unofficial graduate transcript in .pdf format. Please do not send your transcript separately from your other application materials. Currently enrolled students may download their unofficial transcripts through the MyCUInfo student portal (click on the Student tab, then click the "View/Request Transcripts" button).

Expectations
Successful applicants must submit a CBIS Fellowship Activity Report on their activities within one month of their return to CBIS@colorado.edu. ÌýThe Guidelines can be found here. ÌýThese reports play an essential role in helping the Center demonstrate the importance and ongoing value of the Ogilvy Fellowships and the Conference Travel Grants. Failure to submit a report will disqualify an applicant from receiving any future CBIS grant or fellowship.
Eligibility
Conference Travel Grants are available to graduate students who have presented or will present papers addressing subjects dealing with British and/or Irish Studies, at a conference during the current academic year or the first semester of the next academic year.Ìý The paper must be related in some way to the study of British and/or Irish Studies. The conference may be located anywhere. Delivering a conference paper in the UK or Ireland does not automatically qualify unless the paper is related to British and/or Irish Studies. Awards will NOT be given for attending a conference without delivering a paper.Ìý
- Preference will be given to students presenting at major national or international conferences (as opposed to local or regional ones), and/or to those whose presentation is related to work on a thesis or dissertation, but other students are encouraged to apply.
- Previous winners of Graduate Student Conference Travel Grants may apply. They must, however, have submitted their report(s) on any previous CBIS grant or fellowship within the required time frame
- A conference travel grant may fund up toÌý$950Ìýfor conferences held in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and up to $1,900Ìýfor conferences held in other countries.ÌýPartial grants may be awarded at the discretion of the awarding committee.Ìý
- ***NEW*** Graduate students who are presenting a paper in a virtual/online conference may apply to have their registration fee reimbursed. The above-mentioned eligibility criteria that are not related to physical travel still apply.

- Application Form
- A brief description of your paper followed by an explanation of how it fits into your field of specialization and how you anticipate this particular conference will help your research and/or career (be more specific than “I will meet important people in my field"). This must be no longer than 500 words, double-spaced, with standard margins, in 11-point or 12-point standard font (such as Times New Roman).
- AÌýcomplete andÌýdetailed budget that follows the budget guidelines listed in this document. (If you plan to stay in London, please be sure to apply for the Hazel Barnes FlatÌýASAP.)
- The acceptance letter or email you received from the conference organizers. A forwarded acceptance email or .pdf scan of a hard copy letter are both acceptable.
